Your Body, Your Diet: A Complete Program for Losing Weight, Boosting Energy, and Being Your Best Self

Elizabeth Dane has helped hundreds of people control their weight and lead healthier, calmer, more rewarding lives. Now it’s your turn. With Dr. Dane’s breakthrough new book, you can finally look–and feel–exactly the way you want . . . and restore and rejuvenate your body and spirit at the same time! Why does the diet that works wonders for your best friend fail miserably when you try it? The answer, says Dr. Dane, is metabolic type. Our metabolic types determine not only the rate at which we burn calories but also our cravings for particular foods, our changing energy levels throughout the day, the amount of rest and exercise we need, even our personalities. It stands to reason that if you follow a diet that is not tailored to your own meta type, it simply won’t work–no matter how conscientiously you follow the routine. In a program that is anything but routine, Dr. Dane combines the wisdom of ancient Eastern medicine with the latest findings of Western medical science to create a weight loss and lifestyle strategy exclusively for you. This remarkable book includes a detailed, step-by-step, 28-day guide to your personal renewal, including:• How to determine your meta type and start on your new life today• Why you crave the foods that are most damaging to your body–and how to wean yourself off them• Weekly shopping lists and menu plans that make your diet regimen a breeze • Why the combination of foods is as essential as the amount of food you eat• How to maximize your nutrients and burn off fat through correct food preparation techniques (for example, never fry foods containing protein)• How to use vitamins, supplements, and elixirs to boost your body’s cell-renewing potential• How natural stress busters like essential oils can ease and hasten weight loss• An exercise program for your meta type that will condition, strengthen, and sculpt your bodyGive yourself the body–and the life–you have always wanted. If Anyone Is Unifying The GOP, It’s Clinton, Not Trump

So, that happened. At the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, expressions of party unity toward the nominee, Donald Trump, have failed to fully flower. The beginning of the convention was marred by two consecutive days in which the restless “Stop Trump” faction of delegates attempted to have their voices heard against the superior parliamentary maneuverings of the presiding party officials. Then, on Wednesday night, it was time for Trump supporters to let their feelings be known. They greeted Texas Sen. Ted Cruz ― who had pointedly referenced the anti-Trump faction’s demand for the right to “vote their conscience” as he declined to offer Trump his endorsement ― with a fusillade of boos and angry chants, drowning out the tail end of Cruz’s speech.

This is probably not the way Trump wanted his coronation to go. Despite the evident fractures within the party, however, there is one thing that does seem to unite everyone in Cleveland ― a keenly honed animus for Hillary Clinton. And this party conclave has taken that hostility to new, feverish heights with the constant chant of “Lock her up,” a slogan imported into the convention from the Alex Jones-led Infowars set that have been a constant presence on the streets outside the Quicken Loans Arena.

On this week’s edition of “So That Happened,” we hit the ground in Cleveland to talk to delegates on the inside about Cruz’s speech, as well as agitators on the outside who have deftly imprinted their own wild-eyed rhetoric on the proceedings.

Also on this week’s “So That Happened,” Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.) talks to us about the Republican convention, we discuss the high stakes of Clinton’s search for a running mate and we run down the troubling implications of a failed coup d’etat in Turkey.

“So, That Happened” is hosted by Jason Linkins, Zach Carter and Arthur Delaney. Joining them this week: California Representative Xavier Becerra as well as Huffington Post reporters Akbar Ahmed, Laura Barron-Lopez and Mike McAuliff.

This podcast was produced, edited and engineered by Christine Conetta, with assistance from Zach Young.

My Love Letter To You

2016-07-15-1468620026-5807673-1400415_10154064214148711_917411793151883215_o.jpg

Thank you for the love letter. Thank you for the lengthy text message you wrote me from a space of total vulnerability. You hit send hoping for the best as your heart rested anxiously on your sleeve awaiting my text back. Thank you for the crumpled up piece of paper that you ran to give me on the beach, leaving your lifeguard tower abandoned for a split second so as to not miss the chance to ask me out. Thank you for the ride home from yoga. I know it took a lot of guts to ask me on a date just a breath before I closed the car door shut. Your cheeks were bright red as you grasped the steering wheel. But you did it, you faced your fear and made the ask.

I may have turned you down but I didn’t ignore you and I was polite, gracious, and compassionate in my response. I realize that it’s not what you were hoping to hear but I thanked you. I thanked for your sincerity and I meant it when I said that I was humbled by the effort. I see how you show up for love and it’s the same I see in me. Believe me when I say that I know how you feel.

There was the time that I went to the other side of the country to surprise you at your concert, palms sweaty in the back of the venue as I awaited the imminent moment that I’d say, “Hi! I came to see you because I care, I’ve missed you and I really like you.” Remember when I sent you that tiny box with a gemstone in it to protect you on your travels? Or what about when I left you a flower under your windshield wiper?

I’m the not-so-secret admirer just like you.

Whenever my romantic actions result in a “turn down” I don’t let it get me down. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be bold and tear down any walls of fear that existed around being rejected. I know I did the right thing by stepping forward and diving into it.
Disappointment can last a minute but regret can last a lifetime.

When I receive your old-school love letter, your authentic compliment in line at Whole Foods, your poem and your nervous ask, know that I see and understand you. I may not say “yes” but I’ll tell you thank you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. It’s easy to hide behind technology as we explore our hearts that are seeking to connect but It’s not easy to show up in person. If we desire something or someone, it’s our actions that will propel us to a result. Some of the most treasured words to me are those spoken by Mahatma Gandhi,

“Your beliefs become your thoughts,
Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions,
Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values,
Your values become your destiny.”

Thank you for the love letter, the art you made me, the authentic compliment, and for asking a stranger to dinner. I hope that you’ll receive this love letter back to you:

Dear Fellow Romantic,

Please keep showing up for life like you’ve been. Don’t let a “no” or even silence jade you. It’s you who sees the rose and it’s you who gets to smell her enchanting aroma. With eyes wide open continue to see, feel and express your deep experience of the world because that will inspire others to dive into their fears instead of letting fear block destiny. The more you show up for life in full expression of your hopes and dreams, the more that life will become your dream come true. It’s the romantics that see the glass half full. So please, beautiful soul, never become jaded. Always write love letters and always be able to receive them with grace, compassion, and a warm thank you.

With Love,
Alicia

How To Thrive With Stress

“For fast-acting relief, try slowing down.” ~ Lily Tomlin

Significant events in our lives, even ones that we expect to be positive, such as falling in love, usually cause many changes in our daily existence, and affect our perception about our life or plans for the future. As creatures of habit, any deviation in our routine creates some level of stress, as do more difficult situations such as the loss of a job or a loved one.

Dr. Dave Richo pointed out in his book, The Five Things We Cannot Change…and the Happiness We Find by Embracing Them, that one of the five things that can’t be changed in life is that “everything changes and ends.” So considering that everything in life is in a constant state of change (in fact, the molecules of the chair you may be sitting on are actually changing at this very moment), stress is a necessary part of life.

If we were to have no stress at all, we would not experience new and exciting adventures. Good stresses consist of positive events, such as falling in love or starting along an exciting new path toward our dreams. These stresses are referred to as eustress, and while too much of a good thing can cause us to feel stressed out, in general, eustress is caused by stresses we can cope with and that motivate us, focus our energy, create excitement and a feeling of vitality and passion about life–even improve our performance. Distress, on the other hand, is caused by situations that we believe we cannot handle and result in us feeling stressed out.

Whether we believe that the changes caused by a life event are exciting and that we can handle them — or we believe that they are overwhelming and beyond our ability to cope — determines if we adapt smoothly and enjoy the excitement of a new experience or feel stressed out by it. Therefore, it’s our reaction to the changes we face, as well as our ability to adapt to them, which creates the impact on our lives

One of the greatest causes of stress is our lack of acceptance of our present circumstances. “What is” includes how things are right now, as well as the fact that everything changes and ends. Wrote Dr. Richo, “Every beginning leads to a finale. Built into all experiences, persons, places, and things is a life span.” When we cling to things or to situations, we feel stress because, no matter how hard we try, we can’t stop this reality of life.

The stress response is also often referred to as the fight-or-flight response. Our body prepares to fight or to run from any situation we perceive as threatening. At this time, both mind and body make adjustments in order to deal with what we believe to be a potential threat. These include increased blood pressure, rate of breathing, metabolism and muscle tension. Even brain waves rise in intensity and frequency. Blood flow to the muscles of our arms and legs actually elevates by 300 percent to 400 percent when we’re in this mode. And production of adrenaline, norepinephrine, and cortisol surges in order to increase our energy and alertness. All of these adjustments occur so that, in the case of a real danger, we’re prepared to fight it or to flee from it.

In reality, most of the stressors we face are false alarms. The threat is rarely one of life or death and there rarely is a reason to fight or run. Usually, there is no threat at all beyond what we create in our own minds. If we have a tendency to interpret events as dangerous, then we’ll frequently (perhaps daily, or even many times per day) experience this fight-or-flight response and will, most likely, experience it for extended lengths of time.

The research has demonstrated again and again that chronic stress can cause damage to every system of the human body, as well as depression and anxiety disorders, which consist of frequent or constant feelings of fear that interfere with enjoying life. According to cardiologist, stress researcher, and author of The Relaxation Response, Dr. Herbert Benson, because we don’t actually have to fight or flee in most situations in which we experience this fight-or-flight response, we don’t burn off the energy that we produced during this reaction. So, for example, the chronic increase of blood flow and the resulting chronic increase of blood pressure can then lead to cardiac problems, arthrosclerosis, strokes, and internal bleeding. In addition, the rise in production of adrenaline and norepinephrine, if it continues for an extended period of time, can cause irregular heart rhythm and increased sensitivity to physical pain, as well as emotional distress, such as anxiety, depression, lower frustration tolerance, irritability, and quickness to anger.

But, take heart — there’s good news. The very same mechanism that turned on the stress response can also turn it off. Dr. Benson, coined this the “relaxation response”. When our body is in a relaxed state, it’s impossible to experience the stress response because these are two totally opposite biological states. According to Benson, “The human body is geared to react by providing this calm state — the opposite of the fight-or-flight response — whenever the mind is focused for some time and disregards intrusive, everyday thoughts. In other words, when the mind quiets down, the body follows suit. So powerful, in fact, is this process that you need not believe.”

Even better news is that by inducing that relaxation response on a regular basis, we can heal health issues and psychological distress caused by stress. “Just as repeated activation of the fight-or-flight response can lead to sustained problems in the body and its mechanics, so too can repeated activation of the relaxation response reverse those trends and mend the internal wear and tear brought on by stress,” wrote Benson.

Said Steve Kane, yoga instructor, when he was on my radio program, “We can build our resilience to stress by shifting our awareness to our body and our breath. Just a few minutes per day of conscious breathing can help us to build this resilience.”

Here are 10 tips for manifesting the relaxation response and building our resilience to stress:

1. Breathe in slowly and gently through your nose to the count of 6. Breathe out slowly and gently through your mouth to the count of four. As you inhale, try to expand your belly. As you exhale, notice your belly sinking. With each inhalation and exhalation, think of this little meditation recitation from, Peace Is Every Step, by the Vietnamese Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh, “Breathing in, I calm my body. Breathing out, I smile. Dwelling in the present moment, I know this is a wonderful moment!”

2. Be like a child again and color. Adult coloring books are the new craze and for good reason. Coloring has been found to calm the mind, slow down thoughts, and ease anxiety and stress.

3. Terry Hershey, in his book, The Power of Pause, suggests looking at the moon, if you can. “Stare at it and breathe in, breathe out. Think of this moonlight bathing your whole life — even the parts that are disorganized and unfinished.”

4. Use relaxing imagery. For example, close your eyes and imagine that you are floating on a giant leaf and gently drifting along with the slow current of a lazy river.

5. Listen to relaxing music in combination with any of the above techniques.

6. Meditate.

7. Do yoga.

8. Take a 20-minute Epsom salt and lavender oil bath.

9. Get a massage.

10. Try on an attitude of curiosity and openness about changes in your life, even allowing yourself to feel excited, rather than fearing these new experiences.

Finally, here’s an extra tip for inducing the relaxation response: Cultivate an attitude of gratitude. Be grateful for everything that is, all of the changes of life, even those that we don’t particularly like. The painful experiences help us grow and they prove that we’re actually living life and taking risks, opening the doorway for new experiences and deeper love. As Leonard Cohen wrote in his song, Anthem, “There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.”

Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel Identified As Driver Of Truck In Nice Attack

A truck driver who killed and injured dozens in Nice, France, on Thursday has been identified as a 31-year-old French-Tunisian named Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, according to French media and CBS News.

The white truck barreled into a large crowd that had gathered on a promenade to watch a Bastille Day fireworks display in the Mediterranean city. Witnesses said bodies were scattered over a mile down the road. The driver stopped and bolted out of the truck to shoot at pedestrians, according to the TV station French 24.

The attacker died during a gun battle with police. Authorities found papers identifying Bouhlel inside the truck afterward, Agence France-Press news agency reported. Police sources told the Associated Press and French media that the suspect was known for local crimes, but had no known terrorism ties.

French media reported that Bouhlel was a married father. AFP said that authorities raided his apartment, located in a middle class Nice neighborhood, on Friday morning. Neighbors told AFP that he was quiet and kept to himself.

Regional president Christian Estrosi had said that the truck was loaded with guns and grenades, though some of them were fake.

Authorities deemed the violence a “terrorist act” and extended a state of emergency for three months, though a motive is not yet known and there have been no claims of responsibility.

France has suffered several major terrorist attacks in the past year. Attacks on the Charlie Hebdo magazine offices and a kosher supermarket in Paris killed 16 people in January 2015. A series of coordinated attacks around the French capital in November 2015, including a hostage crisis at the Bataclan theater, killed 130 people.

“Horror has again struck France,” French President Francois Hollande said in an address.

The American Consultants Rx discount prescription cards are to be given free to anyone in need of help curbing the high cost of prescription drugs.

Due to the rising costs, unstable economics, and the mounting cost of prescriptions, American Consultants Rx Inc. (ACRX) a.k.a (ACIRX) an Atlanta based company was born in 2004. The ACRX discount prescription card program was created and over 25 million discount prescription cards were donated to over 18k organizations across the country to be distributed to those in need of prescription assistance free of charge since 2004.

The ACRX cards will offer discounts of name brand drugs of up to 40% off and up to 60% off of generic drugs. They also possess no eligibility requirements, no forms to fill out, or expiration date as well .One card will take care of a whole family. Also note that the ACRX cards will come to your organization already pre-activated .The cards are good at over 50k stores from Walgreen, Wal mart, Eckerd”s, Kmart, Kroger, Publix, and many more. Any one can use these cards but ACRX is focusing on those who are uninsured, underinsured, or on Medicare. The ACRX cards are now in Spanish as well.

American Consultants Rx made arrangements online for the ACRX card to be available at http://www.acrxcards.com where it can also be downloaded. This arrangement has been made to allow organizations an avenue to continue assisting their clients in the community until they receive their orders of the ACRX cards. ACRX made it possible for cards to be requested from online for individuals and organizations free of charge. Request for the ACRX cards can also be made by mailing a request to : ACRX, P.O.Box 161336,Atlanta,GA 30321, faxing a written request to 404-305-9539,or calling the office at 404-767-1072. Please include name (if organization please include organization and contact name),mailing address, designate Spanish or English, amount of cards requested, and telephone number.

American Consultants Rx is working diligently to assist as many people and organizations as possible. It should be noted that while many other organizations and companies place a cost on their money saving cards, American Consultants Rx does not believe a cost should be applied, just to assist our fellow Americans. American Consultants Rx states that it will continue to strive to assist those in need.

Even the Lone Ranger Had Tonto

The current presidential race got me thinking about what truly makes a strong, powerful and trusted leader in the world. For the purposes of this blog, let’s leave opinionating about the candidates’ abilities at the moment up to CNN, FOX NEWS, and Saturday Night Live. Instead, let’s focus on your leadership abilities. On how you become a leader in your own life, at work, at home, in the classroom, and in your community.

Why? Because great leaders inspire change.

I decided to do a little research and find out what people think great leadership consists of. I discovered that not everyone has the same list; and, in fact, I’ve been getting a little flack for how “intense” and demanding my definition is. However, everything special or extraordinary I ever produced in my life came on the heels of a dare or overcoming some sort of fear, so what the heck, I dare you to define leadership as boldly as I do, and then go for it.

WHAT MAKES A GREAT LEADER?

  1. You have a defined purpose. Your vision is locked into your gut. You know who you are and what you want to say.
  2. You walk your talk.
  3. You talk and talk. You want to be heard and followed.
  4. Your mission is for a higher purpose.
  5. You set an example. In other words, you put yourself through something to turn your ordinary into extraordinary, publicly.
  6. You are transparent. You don’t hide things. People are allowed to know you, warts and all.
  7. You master your own mind and keep excuses at bay.

So, are you living your true mission? Do you know people like this? Sure, it’s a stringent, impressive and not easily achievable list. Except, if you’ve got any interest like me in its pursuit, I’ve put together a few pointers below for you to ponder as you step up and into being a powerful, purposeful leader in your life.

BUTCHER YOUR CHICKEN

Being a leader means people will look at you, watch you more closely and yes, judge you. There is no way around it. Many of us are fearful of being judged and thus manage what we say. You cannot be a chicken and a great leader at the same time. If you are afraid of being judged or worried about what people think about you, you will never be proud and confident in your life.

Do note, if you are judging your bosses, spiritual leaders or yoga teachers, it probably means you want their job and think you could do it better, but are too chicken to admit it. Because we know how strongly we judge, we fear being judged by others. Know you are going to be judged and busy yourself with setting standards that YOU want to meet and then meeting them.

OWN YOUR CRAP

Now, we all make mistakes and have negative qualities. It’s hard for anyone to admit when he or she is wrong, but it’s especially hard when you are the leader and you have to admit it up and down the pecking order, or in front of everyone. At our company, we make telling on ourselves a common practice, but it’s still hot-in-the-face-worthy work. And, we recognize how unique this culture is to be so inviting and forgiving. In most communities, admitting you’ve been a jerk is a big risk and pride prevents you from doing it, even if it would be the quickest way to resolve conflict, upgrade a system and/or improve your ability to lead.

A while back, I told a coworker that I thought I could do something better than she could. It turned out I was wrong. Now, as long as I didn’t own that “truth” or tell anyone, I still believed I could do it better. I’m sure you can imagine how much I did not want to admit out loud that disgusting judgment. But I did!

Whenever I own my crap or cop to something, as soon as I say it out loud, its validity is now in question and communication, leadership and affinity can be restored. Once it’s vocalized, it’s as if something about the words meeting with the air changes it (like iron oxidizing into rust) and it becomes absurd. We can all get back to work and I can go back to leading, not from on a high horse and being above others, but from a place grounded in my own integrity. I know I’m not perfect, and as a leader, I made the promise to always look for my weaknesses and mistakes and own them.

Telling the truth and owning what doesn’t work about you, keeps you trustworthy and safe to those around you.

EVEN THE LONE RANGER HAD TONTO

Great leaders are not controlling or ‘Lone Rangers.” They know when to ask for help and delegate. They are team players who let others rise up around them. I can be a baby at this level of leadership. I like trying to do everything myself, but it never works out for me. I end up getting overwhelmed, start dropping balls and people stop trusting me. I now have promises about delegating tasks to employees and communicating when I need help. This brings the team closer together and has people trust me more.

Love
Laurie

What Research Says About Which Decisions We Regret The Most

This article first appeared on QuietRev.com

Therese Huston is a cognitive psychologist at Seattle University and author of How Women Decide: What’s True, What’s Not, and What Strategies Spark the Best Choices, published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (2016).

Imagine this scenario, adapted from the book Stumbling on Happiness by Harvard University psychologist Daniel Gilbert. You’re going through some old boxes, and you find a bundle of savings bonds that your grandma purchased for you when you were a child. You think about cashing in some of them and investing them in Company A, but you’re busy and never get around to it. You learn two years later that if you had invested in Company A, you’d be $ 1,000 richer.

Now imagine a second scenario. You find some forgotten savings bonds from your grandma tucked away in a box. You decide to cash them in and invest the money in Company B. Two years later, you learn that if you had just left them alone to continue collecting dust and interest, you’d be $ 1,000 richer.

In both scenarios, you made a mistake. The question is, which mistake causes you greater regret in the long run? Research by Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky shows that most of us, nine out of ten, expect to feel more regret in the second scenario, when we invested badly. No one wants to look or feel like a fool, and foolish action seems much worse than foolish laziness. Most of us would rather be teased for being boring, for refusing to get onto the dance floor than for strutting out there and doing something embarrassing.

But here’s what’s surprising: most of us would be wrong, at least in the long term. Research study after study shows that we do have short-lived regrets for the dumb things we did, but those regrets fade quickly, usually within two weeks. But the regrets for things we didn’t do, the missed opportunities? Those last for years.

A team of researchers at Cornell University asked people in their seventies, “What would you do differently if you could live your life over?”

Some people regretted their actions: “I shouldn’t have gotten married so young,” or “I should never have taken up smoking.”

But four times as many people described things they wish they’d done, actions they wished they’d taken.

“I should have finished college.”

“I should have aimed higher in my career.”

Or “I was too meek—I should have been more assertive.”

We think we’ll regret what we do, but most of us have bigger regrets for the things we didn’t do, when we didn’t invest our time, money, or energy.

One of my most poignant opportunities to act came about 14 years ago. I’d interviewed for a job that would require me to move across the country to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They made me a generous offer, and I had seven months before I had to pack up and leave.

There was just one problem with leaving Portland: I’d never actually lived there.

For the 2 ½ years I’d lived in the Pacific Northwest, I had lived in a cookie-cutter apartment complex in the suburbs. My neighborhood consisted of a 7-lane divided highway lined with car dealerships on one side and lumber suppliers on the other. Great for my commute, terrible for anything else. No coffee roasters, no craft breweries, no sidewalks, and certainly no mustachioed men like those you see on Portlandia. It could have been Toledo, Ohio, and you wouldn’t have known the difference.

If I wanted to leave the Pacific Northwest with no regrets, I needed to move to Portland. It was the coolest city I knew, and I’d always imagined living there. Should I have done it sooner? Probably, but now was my chance.

My work colleagues questioned my sanity. You’re moving across the country, but first, you’re moving seven miles east? For seven months? Six, actually. I had used up a month deciding.

I found a basement apartment I could afford one block off NW 23rd Street, the hippest of the hip. The apartment’s low ceiling was a maze of banging water pipes, and the tiny windows let in almost no light, but it didn’t matter. Now the streets in my neighborhood were lined with boutiques and upscale dessert shops, and people rode single-speed bikes and sat in doorways, reading books. I walked those sidewalks every day.

Was it inconvenient to upend my life twice in six months? Of course. I lost several weekends packing and unpacking boxes. I broke several fragile items in my haste; one set of hand-blown wine glasses, a gift, never made it to Pittsburgh.

Was it worth it to live in a place I’d always dreamed of? Absolutely. Not a single regret. I could replace wine glasses, but I couldn’t replace an experience.

I research decision-making, and in my interviews, people often describe the regrets looming around what they didn’t do. One woman softly described her regrets about not pursuing her first true love. She even showed me an old picture of him. Another said she regretted not negotiating her first job offer because she then felt undervalued for years. Three people said, “I regret that I didn’t leave my last job sooner.”

We regret not acting when we had the chance, or we regret waiting too long. We regret not reaching out to a sibling, not pursuing that master’s degree, or not standing up to a bully at work. We don’t have as many regrets about the things we chose to do. Our actions usually become things that were meant to be, and even our poor choices teach us something.

But why? Why don’t people have strong regrets for their actions, particularly actions that make their lives harder? Researchers believe that whenever we act, particularly when it’s a big decision such as getting married or quitting a job, we work the results of that decision into our life story and our understanding of who we are. It’s how we create meaning in our lives. I chose this, and yes, it created a real mess for me, but it also helped me become the person who stands here today.

Perhaps the most telling subject to study regret is divorce. Since divorce means a marriage has come to an end, and sometimes a costly, prolonged, and painful one at that, we might expect that divorced people regret ever getting married. What might you predict? That 75-80% of divorcees regret getting married? Maybe at least 50%? Go lower. One study of nearly 900 people who had been through a divorce found that only 39% of them regretted getting married.

Why would 6 out of 10 think a marriage that didn’t work was still a good choice? Ask a divorced friend if he regrets getting married, and he might say, “No, I have two wonderful kids,” or “I regret that we didn’t separate sooner, but I don’t regret getting married. I wouldn’t be the person I am now if it weren’t for that relationship.” As one woman said about the decision to marry her first husband, “Of course, I’d love to go back and whisper some advice into the ear of that 26-year-old, but I’m not sure I’d tell her, ‘Don’t do it.’”

Granted, we often regret our actions in the moment. You regret eating too much at dinner. You regret telling a joke if no one laughs. And plenty of people regret slipping in late for a meeting. But do they swear off tardiness forever? They may be prompt the rest of the day, but research predicts that within a month, they’ll revert to their old ways. Regrets for things we do are short-lived.

Normally, I study women’s decisions, but this is one finding that’s robust across genders. Most of us, men as well as women, regret the actions we fail to take longer and more intensely than the actions we take. And this finding isn’t special to the United States. We see the same pattern across a diverse range of cultures and social traditions, including in countries such as the UK, France, Japan, Russia, and China.

If we feel best about the actions we take, does that mean you should say yes to every opportunity? Of course not. Practically speaking, that’s impossible (and frankly, not enjoyable). But it’s worth paying attention to your big goals. If there’s something you’ve always wanted to do and a door swings open, pay attention to it. Your mind can generate a dozen possible regrets, but in the end, ignoring that open door might very well be the biggest.

Dear Jennifer (And All Women)

This week, I was having dinner with two friends who happen to be two of the most successful and beautiful women I know.

As it usually does with female friends, conversation quickly turned to clothes and from clothes to bodies and from bodies to general self-loathing.

We each participated.

I hate my tummy, always have. I’m not a fan of my teeth either and am willing one day to fork over a lot of money to change them. They each hated their arms, my housemate hates her nose, my mom hates her neck, and I’ve never met someone who had something positive to say about their thighs.

I’m not overstating these two friends. They’re each stunning in their own right, and intimidatingly successful. One has a job that hundreds would covet and has risen through the ranks of her career at an unprecedented speed. The other is fronting a massive national campaign that has received global attention.

And we sat there, talking about arms.

On Thursday, Jennifer Aniston articulated the subconscious agreement all women enter into. The “agreement” is an unwritten standard of expectations for all women. Women must be skinny, quiet, dainty, successful but not overly successful, they must get married, have children and then bounce back to being skinny.

We enforce these expectations on each other. We wonder why our single friends are single, we wonder when our loved up friends will get married and we ask when our married friends will have children.

We enforce these expectations on ourselves. We strive for thigh gaps, longer legs, flatter tummies and of course, toned arms.

Throughout my career, I’ve met and interviewed dozens of incredible women. Beautiful women, women I admire and women who’s success I try to emanate. I remember snippets of most of these interviews but the most poignant moment I had was when speaking to a survivor of an eating disorder. She was talking about her girlfriend and spoke passionately about what she admired most in her, gushing over her kindness, her intelligence and her wit. She was a confident speaker, but when I asked her why she admired those traits in a partner but hated herself purely on physical attributes, she was speechless.

In fairness, it’s a question I can’t answer either.

Beauty is a double-edged sword — what we admire in others is rarely what we strive for in ourselves.

Aniston called for an end to this subconscious agreement, she pleas for a conscious attempt to re-evaluate beauty and to change the currency through which we value a woman’s worth.

She want’s to change the record and so do we.

Of course, it’s easy to buy into the agreement. We’ve got a lot of work to do to change things. We’re surrounded by unrealistic standards of beauty, we’ve evolved to be voyeuristic and we’re guilty of speculating.

But Jesus we’ve got to be sounder to each other and ourselves. We need to be a sisterhood.

I need to tell my friends that they have fucking great arms. That I’m amazed at each of them and that it astounds me what they’re capable of.

I need to say sorry to Jennifer Aniston for caring that she might be pregnant and say that generally she’s just a total badass and I fucking loved Cake.

I want a flatter tummy, but I also want to be a better woman, a better friend and a smarter journalist. I want to write for the women I admire, write about the women I admire, and radiate support.

So thanks Jen, sign me up for the new agreement.

You’re Probably Throwing Away ‘Expired’ Food That’s Totally Fine To Eat

It’s breakfast time. You pull a carton of milk out of the fridge, excited for a bowl of delicious cereal. But to your horror, you notice your milk has expired.

What do you do?

Maybe you sniff it, take a swig. Maybe you toss it.

Either way, you probably shouldn’t worry too much about what the date on the carton says. In the U.S., date labels are generally terrible at telling people when their food will become unsafe to consume, some experts say.

That could change soon, however. Advocacy groups like environmental nonprofit Feedback are pushing food producers to replace confusing labels with clearer date markers. In addition, recently proposed federal legislation would standardize date labeling across the country. Both efforts aim to replace the current date labeling system with two labels: one for quality (”best if used by”) and one for safety (”expires on”).

Up to 40 percent of the U.S. food supply goes uneaten every year, according to a widely cited 2009 study of food waste. Nearly 20 percent of food waste in people’s homes is caused by the confusing date labeling system, according to Niki Charalampopoulou, managing director of Feedback. Simply making date labels easier to understand would avoid 398,000 tons of wasted food every year, one study found.

Proponents of clearer date labels say they’re a much needed mend to a food system that churns out gobs of waste. Fixing date labels is the “low-hanging fruit” in the fight to eliminate wasted food, Dominika Jarosz, a campaign manager at Feedback, told The Huffington Post. “It’s a relatively simple fix and it would have a massive impact,” she said.

There’s a welter of labels out there (”sell by,” “use by,” “best before,” “expires on,” “enjoy by,” etc.). None is regulated by the federal government, and few actually indicate when consuming something poses a threat to your health.

In general, food producers get to come up with their own date labels based on when they think their products will go bad or lose their freshness. Some states have laws requiring food producers to put date labels on their products, but the rules vary from state to state. The result is a patchwork labeling system that can leave consumers perplexed, according to Emily Broad Leib, director of the Food Law and Policy Clinic at Harvard University.

Some state food labeling laws “just say there can be any date label and it just has to appear on certain foods,” Broad Leib told HuffPost. “It’s still up to the manufacturer to set those dates.”

“Some companies say, ‘We literally just pick a date out of thin air,’” she added.

In early 2016, the Harvard Food Law and Policy Clinic produced a (surprisingly dramatic) video, seen below, explaining the problems with confusing date labels.

Confusing and inconsistent labeling can baffle shoppers. Less than half of people surveyed for one study knew the difference between “sell by” and “use by” dates (for the record: “sell by” is for grocers, and “use by” usually tells shoppers when food is freshest). Over a third of consumers said they always throw out food close to or past its expiration date, and nearly 90 percent said they do so occasionally, according to a survey from Harvard’s Food Law and Policy Clinic.

In general, people tend to wrongly assume that date labels indicating a food’s freshness (like “best before”) are telling them when their food will no longer be safe to eat. That can cause people to needlessly toss food that’s a little old.

The worst that happens if you eat something spoiled is it doesn’t taste good and you’re like, ‘That was gross.’
Emily Broad Leib, Harvard Food Law and Policy Clinic

The vast majority of food is safe to eat even after it passes the date on the label, Broad Leib said. “The worst that happens if you eat something spoiled is it doesn’t taste good and you’re like, ‘That was gross,’” she added. “But we’re starting to realize we only prioritize safety and we draw a halo around safety — then we end up throwing away food.”

While experts say boiling expiration labels down into two easy-to-understand dates would help reduce waste, making labels clearer isn’t going to solve the country’s massive food waste problem on its own, Broad Leib said.

“I don’t think it’s the silver bullet where if we address this one issue we’re going to eliminate the problem,” Broad Leib said. “If this is going to work we’re going to have to do a lot of education.”

So let’s start now. That milk from earlier, it’s almost certainly OK to drink.

“It’s actually fine to consume milk sometimes two weeks after it has expired,” Feedback’s Charalampopoulou said. Besides, she added, “your senses are the best guide.”

Bottoms up.

Bill Maher Rips Republicans Over California’s Booming Economy

Bill Maher ripped into the GOP’s policy of cutting taxes for the rich on Friday night.

The “Real Time with Bill Maher” host said the state of California was proof that doing the reverse, and instead raising taxes on the most wealthy, could actually lead to a booming economy.

The comedian gloated about how The Golden State, where “Democrats from governor on down control every office and voting body,” was now heading toward becoming the fifth largest economy in the world.

“Thanks, England,” he quipped, in reference to the United Kingdom’s falling in the global financial ranks following its decision to quit the European Union in a so-called Brexit.

Meanwhile, in Republican-run states like Kansas and Louisiana, Maher said the “old trickle down theory of cutting taxes on the rich and they’ll do their thing” was “failing catastrophically.” It was time for Republicans to try something different, he added.

“If Republicans are going to keep calling states ‘laboratories of democracy,’ they have to start looking at the results from the lab,” said Maher.

“After Arnold (Schwarzenegger) left office, we eliminated what scientists would call variables — in this case, the Republicans,” he added. With the Democrats in firm control in California, Maher said it allowed the possibility to “really study what happens when liberal policies are tried unimpeded.”

“And the only thing I have to say to Republicans about that is: scoreboard, bitches,” he added.

The Care Of The Human Spirit: Spirituality And Religiosity And Living With Cancer

Marvin Omar Delgado Guay, M.D. and Lorenzo Cohen Ph.D.
Department of Palliative, Rehabilitation and Integrative Medicine

2016-07-01-1467403326-5626240-0775_0178.JPG

Spirituality and religious beliefs can be important to the well-being of people who have cancer, enabling them to better cope with the disease. Spirituality and religiosity may help patients and families find deeper meaning and experience a sense of personal growth during cancer treatment, while living with cancer, and as a cancer survivor.

Studies show that religious and spiritual values are important to most people in the U.S and other countries. Patients may consider themselves as spiritual, religious, or both. These spiritual values can support an individual’s sense of peace, purpose, connectedness to the moment, to self, to others, to nature, to the significant or sacred, and beliefs about the meaning of life. Spirituality is also connected to finding direction, self-worth, belonging to a community, to love, to be loved, and is often facilitated through seeking reconciliation when relationships are broken.

A recent study appearing in JAMA Internal Medicine reported that women who had frequent attendance to religious services might have lower risk of all-cause, cardiovascular disease, and cancer death when compared with those who did not go at all. Factors such as social support, optimism, low rates of depression, and a tendency not to smoke, might have also contributed to the effect. The effect of church attendance alone still seemed to have these benefits.

Achieving higher levels of spirituality through internal spiritual practices and experiences has been associated with more resilience, adaptive coping strategies, and less severe depression. In this way, spirituality provides a system of meaning that emphasizes hope, adaptation, insight, gratitude, and the belief that circumstances are not senseless or meaningless.

Many individuals recognize their life-threatening illness as an opportunity for spiritual growth. Having access to spirituality through meaning, purpose, connections with others, or connections with a higher power can provide them with the spiritual resources necessary to adjust to adverse circumstances.

For some patients, spiritual well-being may affect the whole experience of their illness, as well as their treatment decisions toward the end-of-life. Some patients and their caregivers may want doctors to talk about spiritual concerns, but may feel unsure about how to approach the subject. Patients with cancer also struggle with spiritual/existential concerns alongside the physical and emotional challenges of their illness. It is important to notice that caregivers might also experience spiritual needs/concerns and suffering. Do not be afraid to incorporate spiritual needs into your care.

Here are Six Ways to Foster Your Spiritual Life and a Healing Environment

1. Live one day at the time, and enjoy it with people you love.
2. Make time for yourself; to heal and love.
3. Try to cultivate gratefulness in your life. At some point in your day, write down three things for which you are grateful.
4. Share your emotions – worries, fears, happiness, etc. – with the people you are comfortable with who love and support you.
5. Continue to grow your relationship with a Higher Power (if that is important to you).
6. Continue to grow your relationship with yourself and others.

Do not let spiritual distress affect the way you cope with cancer and its treatment. Addressing spiritual issues with your health care team may improve your health, quality of life and ability to cope.

Why Fitness Pros Need To Stop Talking About ‘Bikini Bodies’

Getting real about powerful results a mindful fitness practice can actually impart.

2016-07-01-1467409353-6709351-Copyofphotoshoot.jpg

I remember my first “selfie.” It was a hot summer day and I was preparing to take my kids, ages 7 and 1 year old to the beach. I dug to the bottom of a bin of pre-pregnancy clothes, I found a two-piece suit and wondered if I’d lost my mind. Would I really feel comfortable wearing a bikini in public? I made a new commitment to barre classes starting mid-pregnancy, and it evolved into a pivot point for my entire life.

The practice left me me centered and confident, internally. When I put that suit on I was so shocked by the strong, muscular body in the mirror, I shut the bedroom door, locked it, and broke out my digital camera to take a picture of myself in the mirror. I had to know if my eyes/mirror were playing tricks on me or if this powerful body was really mine.

As a single mom going through a nasty divorce, showing up at the barre 3-5 days a week had become an oasis of sanity in an otherwise stressful existence. It gave me a break from my kids, and more importantly, a break from my thoughts. It allowed me to get out of my head and into my body. It showed me I had the strength to push through even when things were challenging.

I could feel myself getting stronger when I went from doing pushups on my knees to being able to do them on straight legs, and when I increased my muscular endurance from holding a plank pose for 10 seconds to a full minute and more.

What I hadn’t realized was how much it would change the way I looked – this was more like a surprising side effect of my work at the barre. I felt amazing inside and out. The feelings that prompted that selfie comprised a defining moment for me, internally. Not because I amazed myself with the definition of my own abs. But because I realized how women everywhere are conditioned to think this is what it’s all about, when there had been so much more to my journey than aesthetics.

In the first glance in the mirror that day, I was proud of my inner confidence and physical health. At the same time, my heart sank as I reflected on how many women sell themselves short when they adopt physical appeal as a central point of importance. Inner strength, confidence and resilience can move mountains, create transformation and make the world a better place. Bikini bodies – not.

At the core, I’m a feminist. My definition of this is summed-up in two words: gender equality. Whenever I hear fitness professionals attempt to spark motivation in female clients by talking about bikini season, I cringe. It’s central to my mission as a feminist leader in the fitness industry to do everything in my power to stop women from thinking even for a second that this is what lies at the center of their physical practice.

As founder of Barre & Soul, I see a genuine opportunity for transformation of entire communities. And that change has nothing to do with bikinis. Ensuring women’s bodies are as hot as possible – for the benefit of those taking in the view of them in swimwear this season? What a miss.

At the core of feminism is this idea that the personal is political. Whatever I’m struggling with personally tends to be affecting other women too. A key intersection between feminism and fitness is the issue of body image. But fitness pros should know that a fit lifestyle is about much more than how a body looks. Let’s get straight about the substantive benefits strength and fitness deliver – not just in summertime.

Setting things straight
Fitness is an area of life that can’t be ignored, our health and vitality, physical, intellectual and emotional well-being depend upon it. Unfortunately, it can bring up perfectionism and feelings of inadequacy for women. I believe body image is a big deal, because it affects confidence and can hold women back. If you don’t know already – confidence is a crucial asset every woman can benefit from having more of. Studies show in many areas of life – from personal to professional – confidence matters as much as competence when it comes to success. Men don’t seem to have the same problem. It’s not as simple as telling women to be confident no matter what body they were born with. Fitness pros have an opportunity to lead a change.

There is a sub-text to the overwhelming majority of fitness articles and headlines women are bombarded with in every facet of their lives. It dictates that we should worry about looking a certain way, and when bikini season is here – we need to work our literal asses off to fit the mold. This cultural assumption that we should feel obliged to focus on aesthetically perfecting our bodies is a sad reflection of what it means to develop true confidence. Leaders in the fitness industry should have much more to offer than a bikini body.

Finding strength, inside and out
Speaking from personal experience – I was about as low as could be in life when a renewed commitment to my mind/body fitness practice of barre and yoga brought not only physical strength and stamina, but nothing short of a revolution in my confidence, self-assurance, aspirations and beliefs about what I could achieve in every facet of life.

I was a single parent, struggling in every way to escape a lifestyle burdened by financial strain, domestic violence and emotional abuse. At vulnerable moments in life, the last thing that will draw you in and build you up is a message that you’re just not enough – because your body looks terrible in a bikini, according to some B.S. standard of beauty.

Everybody has their own vulnerabilities that can be addressed in healthy, empowering ways through fitness. The focus needs to be in the right place to create the kind of breakthrough that changed my life. We need to be telling women they have the capability to shed substantive emotional and physical burdens and internal barriers – rather than just focusing on a few stupid pounds.

Focusing on ‘bikini season’ and ‘shaping up for summer’ implies women’s bodies are not their own. Assuming women somehow owe it to society to look a certain way, positions their bodies as objects for consumption. In this paradigm, there is no emphasis on why women might want to be stronger or fitter.

For your 100-old self
Planning to go paddle boarding or hiking with your grandkids? If you don’t build physical, mental and emotional strength and stamina into your routine now – it’s not going to happen. You owe it to your 100 year old self – not the guys checking you out at the beach – to make fitness part of your life. And by the way – almost no one is talking to men about swimsuit season or urging them to present a flawless figure to the world.

Women are already under tremendous pressure to succeed in areas from career, to social and domestic life, to physical beauty. This is all impossibly high-maintenance if we choose to subscribe to it. And it leaves us with substantially less freedom and leisure time to devote to real self-improvement and development compared with men. So don’t buy in!

As an innovator in the fitness arena – I want women to be attracted to a fitness practice that promises more substantial results. It can transform them – and I’m not even talking about their physical selves. The outward results are a significant byproduct of what happens when you find a fitness community that supports you, and embraces a consistent approach integrating mind, body and soul.

Don’t get me wrong — I appreciate my toned muscles. But that’s just the surface. We need to get real, and just stop with the notion of bikini-season. Because you are so much more than just a body.

Obama Jumps Into Wisconsin Senate Race For Russ Feingold

President Barack Obama is sending out a fundraising email Monday morning for Russ Feingold, one of the Democrats’ best prospects for picking up a Senate seat this year.

Feingold is running to retake his old Senate seat from Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), who defeated Feingold in 2010. During his 18 years in the Senate, Feingold was known as one of the chamber’s most progressive members, and this time, Democrats see him as one of their top candidates.

“Russ isn’t afraid to stand up for what he knows is right, even when it isn’t popular,” Obama’s fundraising email reads. “He was the sole senator to vote against the USA PATRIOT Act, and one of very few who stood in opposition to the war in Iraq. Russ also took an early and loud stance in support of marriage equality for gay Americans, and he wasn’t afraid to work with me, side by side, to get the Affordable Care Act passed — helping insure millions of Americans.”

In supporting Feingold, Obama joins Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who has fundraised for the Wisconsin Democrat this year and spoken highly of Feingold’s record in the Senate.

HuffPost Pollster’s average of public polling in the race shows Feingold with a nearly 9-point lead over Johnson.

Feingold endorsed Hillary Clinton for president last week, but Johnson has had some trouble embracing his own party’s presumptive presidential nominee. Johnson has said that he won’t endorse Donald Trump, although he is supporting him.

“To me, ‘endorsement’ is a big embrace. It basically shows that I pretty well agree with an individual on almost everything. That’s not necessarily going to be the case with our nominee,” Johnson told CNN last week, although he’d previously said he would endorse his party’s nominee. “I’ll certainly be an independent voice. Where I disagree with a particular nominee, I’ll voice it. Whether it’s Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump or somebody else, I’ll voice those disagreements.”

This Too Shall Pass

Last year at this time, I was in the thick of it. I was six weeks in with a gassy baby who didn’t sleep. My husband and I were at each other’s throats. My family was on the other side of the country. My hormones were raging. My house was a mess.

When a mom friend innocently asked how it was going, it all word vomited out of my mouth.

“This too shall pass,” she said -– a little sadly. I didn’t really get it until now.

Maybe because when you are in the thick of it, you can’t see past your nose. You think your baby will always be a baby. He will never grow up and he will always be crying and you will never sleep, ever. In the new mother haze, all the crazy that’s in your head comes out to play. You believe your baby will never grow out of the dream feed, he’ll forever need to be swaddled and he’ll always fall asleep in the car.

This, of course, is not true.

But, no matter how many times completely sane people say that you won’t have a college freshman that needs to be rocked to sleep at 3 am, you don’t believe them.

I tried to remember “this too shall pass” whenever I got fried. During those 3 a.m. rocking sessions, it was something I could say to comfort myself. I rocked and rocked and wished so hard that I had could hit the fast forward button.

I wanted to fast forward till he was sleeping through the night. I wanted to fast forward till he stopped crying. I wanted to fast forward to not sterilizing everything. I wanted to fast forward past breastfeeding. I wanted to fast forward past early solids -– steamed sweet potatoes again? I wanted to fast forward through so many things. Milestones, really.

And guess what? It worked. My plea was answered. Somehow, I had found a magical baby fast-forward button. Time bent, the minutes sped up, and the baby grew and grew.

Fast forward to a year later. My friends are all having babies. They are so very tired. They are breastfeeding. They are up all night. I want to tell them that it won’t always be like this.

“This too shall pass,” I say. But I don’t just mean the night waking, tired arms, and the watery poop.

I mean everything. The newborn smell. The baby falling asleep on you. The quiet night bonding. The first smiles. The first foods. The first crawls. The first steps. Everything will pass so very fast.

A year later, I wish I never found that stupid fast forward button.

This morning, we walked to the corner -– picked up croissants and headed to the park. A mom was walking by with a new baby.

“He only sleeps in the stroller!” She said from across the street.

“Oh man, I remember that!” I said.

“It gets better, right?” she said.

I nodded. It gets so much better, but it’s never the same.

Right now, my toddler walks like a drunken man –- off balance and gesticulating dramatically. Curls fall in his blue eyes as his chunky legs stamp down in the ground. He babbles on and on as he walks. He sounds like an ewok. He is hilarious.

My husband is showing him a flower and he is touching it gently with his pointer finger. “Dat!” he says. “Dat! Dat! Dat!”

And I think, right now, this moment, this right here, I don’t want this too to pass.

I close my eyes and think, “Hello out there, if you’re listening –- I’d like to press the pause button. Does anybody know how to press pause?”

You Can Totally Do This Olympic Gymnast’s Workout On Your Lunch Break

Despite being the most decorated gymnast in U.S. history, Shannon Miller’s favorite workout these days is decidedly low-impact.

The 39-year-old mother of two is a self-described walker.

People are always surprised that I don’t do four-hour sweat sessions, or even two-hour sweat sessions,” Miller said. “I don’t have that kind of time and I don’t know many people who do. For me, it’s fitting it in. Like right now, I’m on the phone and I’m pacing around the house getting my steps in.”

It’s a solid strategy. Walking can have huge health benefits, including decreasing obesity risk, lowering blood sugar levels and improving sleep. And it’s government-sanctioned, too: In September, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy recommended walking as a gold-standard form of exercise. Murthy a getting at advised walkers get at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise, or five 30-minute exercise sessions, weekly.

Miller, a woman and children’s health advocate who runs her own lifestyle brand and travels around the country for motivational speeches, is a proponent of working manageable 10-minute exercise blocks into her day — some which she films and uploads to her YouTube channel.

“If you are at home, all is not lost. You can get a great workout just with the things in your house and body,” explained Miller, who creates family-fitness challenges for her kids during TV commercial breaks and attributes her toned arms to lifting her 2-year-old daughter. “It’s about really focusing on those baby steps.”

Miller chatted with HuffPost Lifestyle about her diet, her 2011 ovarian cancer diagnosis and how she stays calm and motivated under pressure:

Q: Between giving talks and being a parent, it seems like you’re constantly on the go. What’s your go-to snack when you don’t have time to cook?

A: I’m not a chef by any stretch of the imagination. I tend to say I eat like a 5-year-old. I’ll have an apple with cheese and almonds or fruit and string cheese. I always have nuts on hand, because it’s good protein and sticks with you. If I’m in a crunch, I’ll just have what I call a peanut-butter lollipop, which is just a big old scoop of peanut butter on a spoon. I’ll pair that with fruit or vegetables.

I almost always have a bag of carrot sticks to munch on when I travel. My husband laughs at me because I’m literally that person who always has food in her purse.

Q: Whether it’s competing in the Olympic games or speaking to a packed auditorium, how do you stay calm and motivate yourself to perform?

A: If you’ve done the work, then there’s nothing to worry about. My parents helped me understand that from an early age, and that always made me feel better when I got up to salute the judge before a balance beam routine. I knew that no matter how the routine went, there was nothing more I could have done to better prepare for that moment.

Take a deep breath and say a prayer (which is what I always did), or think about one positive thing in that extra beat breath you take before you go up.

I always pictured butterflies in my stomach. I would picture those butterflies in my stomach and as I breathed in, the butterflies went up to my chest. And then as I breathed out, the butterflies would fly out my fingertips. It’s okay, the butterflies are gone. Let’s go.

Q: How does that translate to your post-Olympics life? How do you handle unexpected situations that you can’t prepare for?

A: I’m a workhorse. I like to be prepared. But at the same time, life is preparation in a lot of ways. You’re always preparing for those things that you can’t prepare for. For me, it’s understanding what I can control, what I can’t control. I prepare the best I can for those things I know about.

That’s how it was in gymnastics as well. You can’t prepare for every situation that happens at a competition, whether they changed the lineup on you, or the gym floods and it’s different than you thought it was going to be. You just have to rely on the training that you had.

I always pictured butterflies in my stomach. I would picture those butterflies in my stomach and as I breathed in, the butterflies went up to my chest. And then as I breathed out, the butterflies would fly out my fingertips. It’s okay, the butterflies are gone. Let’s go.
7-time Olympic medalist Shannon Miller on staying calm under pressure

Something I thought about during my cancer journey, but learned as an athlete, is to get back up. You are going to make mistakes. You are going to have falls. I think as I’ve gotten older, I’ve gotten better at understanding that it’s not about being perfect. It’s about moving through the journey and really learning from your mistakes to be the best you can be each day.

Q: Did being diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2011 change the way you thought about your health?

A: You realize you aren’t invincible and things can happen no matter how hard you try. For me, it was doubling down on the importance of making my health a priority and not brushing it off, like a lot of women do. We get busy. We have crazy lives and we focus on everything but us.

Now I don’t take it for granted. I have an issue, I get it checked out, or at least I pay attention to it in a different way than I did before. In your 20s, you’re invincible and nothing can ever happen to you. When something happens to you like cancer, you really start to pay attention.

I hit a rut several years back of getting too crazy with my time. You have two kids and time is even less. One of my non-negotiables is that when I get up in the morning, I take five, usually 10 minutes, to focus on my day.

I use a few of those minutes to be appreciative and grateful for all of the opportunities I do have. I say my prayers, and then I take few minutes to think about my day and look at my schedule. Then I take a few minutes to focus on bigger-picture goals and what I ultimately want to achieve with that day.

It helps set the stage and put me in the right mode.

Scotland Presses Ahead With Plans For New Independence Vote

EDINBURGH, June 25 (Reuters) – Scotland’s devolved government is preparing to present legislation allowing a second independence referendum while continuing discussions on its place within the European Union, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said on Saturday.

“A second (Scottish) independence referendum is clearly an option that requires to be on the table, and it is very much on the table,” she said in a live statement.

“To ensure that that option is a deliverable one in the required timetable, steps will be taken now to ensure that the necessary legislation is in place,” she added.

Scotland voted 62 to 38 percent to remain in the EU in a referendum on Thursday, sharply contrasting with Britain’s overall 52-48 percent vote to leave.

That result could be justification for another independence vote, the Scottish government argues. Scottish independence from the United Kingdom was rejected by 55-45 percent in 2014.

3 Life-Changing Reasons To Kick The Gossip Habit

Several years ago I made a vow to give up gossiping and doing so has made me realize how dangerous it is, truly dangerous.

It’s so easy to get caught in an enticing yet unkind conversation about someone else. But if you’ve ever been the target of gossip, as I have been, you know how painful it is. No matter how we excuse it, talking behind another’s back is a harmful habit. My definition of gossip is simple:

Anything you wouldn’t say to
the person you’re talking about

The joke is that a secret is something you tell only one person at a time, but the result is a rumor that spreads like wildfire and alters how another person is perceived. Haven’t we all heard tittle-tattle and thought, Who knew? I had no idea! Beatle George Harrison said it memorably ~

Gossip is the Devil’s radio.

I know you don’t want to be known as a gossip, but it can be so tempting. So here are three reasons to motivate us to kick the habit and make a more positive impact on those around us.

  1. Gossip kills organizations. Whether it’s a global business, a school, a church, or a small partnership, talking behind others’ backs is death to the office. Fueling a negative perception about the boss, a direct report, or even a client saps positive energy from all concerned and diminishes the success of the organization.

In his Forbes magazine article Mike Myatt names it the fastest way to kill corporate culture: “The emotional distress and political discord associated with gossip undermines workplace performance, and can be nothing short of disastrous.”

  2. Gossip kills families. Being part of a strong and loving family is our greatest blessing, one that creates a safe and secure place for everyone fortunate enough to be part of it. Yet when an estrangement occurs, members take sides, and attention is pulled away from taking care of one another and doing our best to contribute to this gift.

My family is a large and loving one, but it too has fallen into this trap. Someone makes a mistake, the finger pointing begins, and the altered perception of this person grows until it’s no longer just gossip but a reason to pull back from the greater family. Fortunately our grandparents and parents were extraordinary models for us, so time goes by, wounds are healed, and we move on together.

  3. Gossip kills relationships. Women sitting around complaining about their husbands, men sharing jokes about wives, friends gossiping about the one who isn’t there. We might as well shoot ourselves in the foot, as the saying goes.

Only once in our 35-year marriage did we gossip about one another, and that was our darkest time. Fortunately we each realized the stories were of our own creation, and we let go of self-fulfilling prophecies that were killing the loving relationship we’d enjoyed for so long.

This habit is indeed the most dangerous one, and the cost is beyond measure. If you’re serious about breaking it, ask yourself, What can I do to break this habit? In addition, here are solutions that are working for me.

  1. Be aware of the pain I have caused others with my gossip.
  2. Let go of my stories about others, one by one, until they’re all gone.
  3. Be present and positive.

And let’s all remember the wisdom of Socrates:

Strong minds discuss ideas, average minds
discuss events, weak minds discuss people.

I’d love to hear about your plans to break this habit! Either leave a comment by scrolling to the bottom of this page or write to me directly at jinny@bestyearyet.com.

The One Factor In The Brexit Vote No One Is Talking About

The U.K.’s historic vote to leave the European Union, many people believe, was driven by opinions on immigration

And it likely was influenced by the way people are psychologically wired. Analysts on Friday repeatedly cited voters’ emotions as the driver of Brexit. Many people may have voted with fear or anger as their primary motivator, even though it had been well known that leaving could have widespread consequences, including economic turmoil and adverse effects on public health

“We are leaving the EU and entering a dark and uncertain period,”Gary Younge, editor-at-large for The Guardian, wrote after the “leave” vote won Thursday’s referendum. “Offered a choice between fear of the unknown or fear of the foreigner, fear inevitably won. Britain lost.”

Why do we fall for fear or anger-based arguments?

Brexit supporters argued for strict controls on immigration, and said Britain’s membership in the EU led to loose borders. The EU’s free-movement policy allows European nationals to live and work in any EU state without a work permit.

The anti-immigration outcry was heightened by the surge of migrants and refugees, including many from the war-torn Middle East. More than 1 million refugees have poured into Europe, primarily in the past year.

The vote shows deep worry about immigrants and what they mean for job security, safety and economic growth — fears that many consider xenophobic.

It’s not hard to see the fear in Brexit supporters’ tweets:

Political language that incites fear by spotlighting terrorism risks, for example, can sway conservative voters, researchers say. Fearful voters are prone to choosing an outcome based on new information, often abandoning their previous loyalties or affiliations.

Many Brexit voters may have felt neutral or even uninformed about the EU, the alliance they voted to leave. The day after the referendum, many UK residents were Googling, “What is the EU?”

Those who are angry are less likely to be invested in the political status quo and the options available to them. Studies show angry voters tend to be partisan and unreceptive to points that conflict with their own, according to the American Psychological Association.

Emotions can rule in the voting booth

Psychologists are increasingly finding that emotions can play a major role in elections.

“Thinking and feeling go hand in hand. In any decision-making — including political decisions — how people feel about the information they’re being given is important,” Tereza Capelos, an expert in political psychology at Surrey University, told the BBC last year. “Emotions help people make decisions.”

Perhaps that’s why the Brexit decision was shocking. Those arguing for Britain to remain in the EU presented sensible reasons (public health, scientific research, the environment, the economy). But many people rejected those rational views and went with emotion. And for many, the result was devastating:

Europe isn’t the only place where fears and frustrations run amuck and influence voting. It’s happening in the U.S. as well, with Donald Trump riding his proposed ban on all Muslims from entering the U.S. to the Republican presidential nomination.

Of course, human nature is a complex construct. There are a lot of other psychological factors that can inform a person’s vote, from attack ads to a candidate’s physical appearance. But they all influence how an individual feels. That means emotions have a very large impact on important choices, like the Brexit referendum.

Fear and anger can have a lot of agency — but they don’t always make the best decisions. (You listening, America?)
