Derailment And How To Manage It

2016-08-19-1471635426-4431424-IMG_4095.JPG

In the world of psychology, derailment describes thought processes that veer off track, go awry, stray from the thought. Like a car that has skidded off the road, the ideas fail to arrive at their destination. In the realm of politics, derailment refers to a tactic by those in power that deflects attention away from complaints about abuse or wrongdoing by introducing an alternative topic. This blog explores derailment as a diversion from a life goal, and how it’s possible to get back on course.

In his journal, the writer John Cheever alluded to a loss of continuity at a critical point in his life. “It seems that in my coming of age I missed a year–perhaps a day or an hour….The consecutiveness of growth has been damaged. But how can I go back and find this moment that was lost?” Although the impact of Cheever’s derailment extends beyond the scope of this blog, his expression highlights the common problem.

In the newly released movie, Florence Foster Jenkins, the heroine, Florence, contracted syphilis from her first husband. As a result, she didn’t bear children and was deprived of a fulfilling family life. That derailment led her to devote her life to singing and supporting the musical world with the fortune she inherited from her father.

We assume an extreme diversion is equivalent to a disaster, but the event may actually represent a chance to recover a “lost” direction or passion. The classic story of The Little Prince (recently made into a popular movie) can be viewed as a metaphorical derailment in the realm of literature. As a young boy, the protagonist of the story drew a boa constrictor swallowing an elephant. But the adults insisted that the drawing resembled a hat. Unimpressed with the child’s skill, the grown-ups redirected him from artistic to practical studies– geography, history, arithmetic, and grammar. “That is why I abandoned, at the age of six, a magnificent career as an artist,” the protagonist says, justifying his profession as a pilot. Years later, his plane crashed in the middle of the desert, and he was visited by a little prince who commanded him to draw. The little prince may well represent the pilot’s imagination or alter ego that harbored his desire to become an artist.

In real life, a patient of mine, Ms. W., experienced a serious depression, a kind of psychological crash. During her hospitalization, she recalled that in her youth, she had aspired to become a singer. In the hospital, she had the opportunity to connect her depression with the long-forgotten ambition. Upon her recovery, she studied voice and became a successful musician.

Conclusion: Although we can’t undo the past, we can recognize a derailment and take action to get back on track.

To Fight Zika Beyond Florida We Need Better Sex Education

In light of the recent news that Zika virus could stay in semen for more than six months ― twice as long as scientists previously though the virus could be detected ― it’s time for the United States to ramp up its focus on the major mechanism for Zika virus transmission after mosquitos: sex.

“For the public health community, Zika represents an unprecedented emergency,” Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, wrote in the Journal of the American Medical Association in August.

“Never before, to our knowledge, has a mosquito-borne virus been associated with human birth defects or been capable of sexual transmission,” Frieden wrote. “The effects of brain damage due to microcephaly and consequences of other Zika-related birth defects are likely devastating, lifelong, and costly.”

As Zika virus spreads, with at least 55 countries and territories reporting local transmissions, according to the CDC, and the United States reporting two areas of active transmission in Florida, health officials like Frieden have called for increased safe-sex messaging, even for people outside active Zika zones.

New York City is ramping up its public health messaging on sexually transmitted infections to include Zika virus in coming weeks, The New York Times reports. The campaign will feature posters, fliers, radio and television ads, in addition to deploying community health workers to communicate the risks of sexually transmitted Zika in person.

Florida’s sex ed blunder

But not everyone is making public health a priority. In Florida’s Broward County, which is adjacent to Miami-Dade County, where active Zika transmissions are occurring, abstinence-only rhetoric is trumping public safety ― at least for now.

According to Miami news station WSVN 7News, Broward County removed two AIDS Healthcare Foundation billboards that featured unrolled condoms reminding people that safe sex “prevents Zika transmissions.”

The Fort Lauderdale mayor’s office and tourism board pressured the company to take down the signs, Michael Kahane, a spokesman for the foundation, told the station. “They felt, I guess, that they could impact tourism,” Kahane said. “I find it completely disgusting.”

Still, neither the mayor’s office nor the tourism board is taking credit for the sign’s removal, so it’s unclear who is behind the billboard takedown.

We still don’t know enough to write strong health policies

Using condoms is key to curbing sexually transmitted infection, including Zika virus, but health experts cautioned against overstating Zika’s sexual transmission risk compared to the larger risk of transmission via mosquitos.

Travel-related Zika virus is a major concern. The CDC currently recommends that pregnant women avoid traveling to areas with active Zika transmissions and use condoms or abstain from sex if their partner has traveled to a Zika outbreak area in the last six months.

Dr. Federico Laham, the medical director of infectious disease at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando stressed that it’s also important for doctors to ask pregnant patients about their travel histories, regardless of whether or not the Aedes aegypti mosquito is present in their areas of practice.

One major challenge for health officials trying to curb sexually transmitted Zika in their respective cities is that it’s difficult to craft definitive public health and safe sex recommendations, because no one knows for sure how long Zika virus can stay active ― or remain capable of transmitting infection ― in men’s semen.

That information is “very important if you are trying to craft a prevention method to your community,” Laham told The Huffington Post. “Any couple expecting a child will live with a lot of anxiety. It’s important for health officials to deliver a clear message.”

Zika isn’t the only STI that can hurt unborn babies

For Dr. Jeffrey Klausner, a professor of medicine in the infectious disease and global health divisions at the University of California Los Angeles, focusing on sexually transmitted Zika and the risk it poses to pregnant women misses the point.

“Zika is important, but we need a much broader holistic approach to address infections in pregnant women,” Klausner said.

He cited congenital syphilis ― when a pregnant woman infected with the disease passes it to her child ― as a more common STI, with equally grave consequences. Indeed, congenital syphilis can cause severe illness, miscarriage, stillbirth and early infant death, as well as blindness, nervous system damage and deformity if left untreated.

“When things are common and they occur regularly people forget about them,” Klausner said. “We need to remind people of the day-to-day risks.”

There were 12 cases of congenital syphilis per 100,000 live births in 2014, an increase from 8 per 100,000 live births in 2012, according to the CDC.

Klausner believes defunded health departments and communicable disease programs in the wake of the 2008 recession is making it even harder to address issues like congenital syphilis and Zika virus.

He’s also frustrated by Congress, which failed to pass a Zika bill before leaving for summer vacation this year.

“You can’t trade the health of one population because of ideological views,” he said. “When Congress does come back, it’s going to be important for local constituents to demand a response.”

Zombie Factory

Zombie Factory

Noting that most traditional examinations of stress view it as a medical condition, this guide takes an anthropological approach and reveals a less threatening picture of this natural response to danger. Using narratives from people in very stressful situationsincluding a spy, an executive, a refugee camp worker, and a policemanthe discussion shows that even harrowing amounts of stress can be productive as long as the patterns of its application do not turn dangerous. Summarizing these findings as they apply to American workers, the authors suggest solutions to avoid becoming a virtual zombie who has little awareness of his actions.

When Work Is Not Enough: State and Federal Policies to Support Needy Workers

When Work Is Not Enough: State and Federal Policies to Support Needy Workers

Efforts to promote work have been the centerpiece of welfare reform over the past ten years. In signing the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996, President Bill Clinton pledged that the sweeping overhaul would “end welfare as we know it” by promoting work, responsibility, and family. To accomplish these goals, policymakers relied on two sets of tools: strict limits on eligibility for traditional benefits and a set of programs designed to make work pay. When Work Is Not Enough presents the first comprehensive analysis of the work support system. Drawing on both state and national data, Robert Stoker and Laura Wilson evaluate a broad range of policies that provide cash or in-kind benefits to low-wage workers, low-income working families, and families moving from welfare to work. These programs include minimum wage rates, Earned Income Tax Credit programs, medical assistance programs, food programs, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families earned income disregards, childcare grants, and rental assistance. Stoker and Wilson break new ground by examining the adequacy and coverage of the work support system in all fifty states and the District of Columbia. They address the prospects for reforming the system, as well as its impact on the politics of redistribution in the United States. Rich in analysis, Wh en Work Is Not Enough will be essential reading for anyone interested in the impact and future of welfare reform.

MTBF, MTTR, And The System Of You

I’ve failed many times. I failed recently and it feels awful. How about you? When was the last time you failed?

When we’re very young we fail a lot. Look at any toddler as they learn to walk. It’s pretty well understood that it’s through failure and persistence that we learn to do things.

Fast forward a few years, and it becomes increasingly difficult for us to accept failure. We assume that we can’t learn and grow at the rate that we could when we were kids. But is that really true? Maybe we stop growing because we’re scared of failure.

The core of this essay came out of teaching Search Inside Yourself in France this summer where participants found some of the analogies below very useful.

2016-08-05-1470428185-4030669-Untitled3.png

Measuring Failure

There are several different metrics we can use when measuring system failures. I want to use two of them to contrast ways of thinking about failure. The first is Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) and the second is Mean Time To Recovery (MTTR).

If you focus on increasing Mean Time Between Failures (or MTBF, the average time between failures), you tend towards building a highly controlled system that stays within safe bounds of operation. You harden your components, control your operating conditions, and are relentless in your pursuit of order.

When I worked at amazon in the early 2000s, both amazon and google were pioneering a slightly different way of thinking about the reliability of computer systems. They began to experiment with the idea of using very cheap components that were known to fail; so “failures” became routine occurrences rather than out-of-the-ordinary events. Then you bind them together with software that expects those failures, and works around them as quickly as possible. You start to focus, then, on the Mean Time to Recovery (MTTR) from a failure — or the time it takes for the system to come back to being operational after a given failure.

The System of You

Think about what those two approaches mean for the System of You.

If you’re reading this, you’re probably old enough that you know that failure usually feels like poop. No one likes that feeling. Think of a time when you felt shame, when you let someone down, when you publicly made a mistake. It was probably uncomfortable and you may have resolved never to feel that again.

In other words, we start optimizing for a very long Mean Time Between Failures; possibly by doubling-down on our strengths, avoiding things that are unfamiliar, unknown, or uncomfortable,.

What would it look like to optimize for Mean Time To Recovery? To push the boundaries of the uncomfortable, to embrace failures, to fail fast and fail often (as the startup mantra goes), and to continue to get better at recovering quickly from those failures.

It may sound good in theory, but given how terrible failure feels, how do you actually do this?

Be with what IS.

At the most basic level, we need to learn to be with whatever is.
What will happen hasn’t yet happened, so cannot actually harm us in this instant.
What was, by definition, has already manifested, and so cannot be changed.
Even what is happening in this instant is already in the process of unfolding, so cannot be changed.
But we do have a choice as to how we react to what is happening right now.

While it might be possible to accept all that intellectually, it still doesn’t change the fact that failure feels awful in the moment. How do we learn to experience the very physical unpleasantness that comes with difficult emotions (like failure)?

This is exactly what we practice when we sit.

After we first train our attention, we learn to bring our attention to physical sensations in all different parts of our body, and observe their characteristics objectively, without labeling them as pleasant or unpleasant. We practice being with unpleasant sensations without pushing them away but instead just really noticing them like a scientist might observe bacteria under a microscope.

Very soon we realize that we need to be skillful not just with the unpleasant, but with the pleasant sensations too.

How could that be important — isn’t it good to feel, well, good?

If we cannot experience pleasant sensations with the same objectivity that we cultivate in the presence of unpleasantness, we quickly go from enjoying them to becoming attached to them. And then the moment they disappear (which they must), we crave them, and we are uncomfortable until we can bring them back.

In a way this is related to Carol Dweck’s research on fixed vs. growth mindset, and the importance of praising effort vs. outcome. Praise feels good, and if the praise is for a positive outcome (“good job acing that test!”) then we tend to only work on things where we expect to get a positive outcome. If the praise is for effort (“you studied hard for that test!”), then we are more open to working on things where our efforts will be recognized, regardless of the outcome.

In a way what we’re talking about here is going one level deeper and weaning ourselves from the need to be praised or recognized — regardless of whether it’s for effort or outcome.

Sensations and MTTR

Wait a sec. Our goal was to reduce Mean Time to Recovery. Let’s suppose you somehow master the art of “being with what is.” How and why does that help reduce MTTR?

There are two aspects to this.

I often use the stubbed-toe example when I teach: take a moment to think about, and briefly re-live, a time you stubbed your toe; and the pain you felt…

Did you later say to yourself: “let me kick the table again so I can really remember what that stubbed toe felt like?” I doubt it.

And yet we do that all the time with our emotions. Something happens that causes us grief, and we re-play that incident over and over again in our minds. Each time we re-play it, we feel the grief, and try to push away that unpleasant feeling. And as we try to push it away, we analyze, dissect, and re-play it yet again.

As we get better with objectively observing sensations, the first thing that happens is that it becomes easier to experience the unpleasantness of failure as a passing bodily sensation, just like a stubbed toe. You can notice its onset, experience it in all its unpleasant and gory detail without needing to push it away, and notice as it passes (as everything does). There’s no need to continue to relive it. We can see ourselves as a sky with dark clouds currently passing through us, rather than identifying with the darkness.

As we learn to experience our sensations objectively, in finer levels of detail, and without pushing away the unpleasant or grasping for the pleasant — the second thing that happens is that we develop an ability to also make better cognitive sense of them. For example:

How much of our grief is from some actual impending issue (“my rent is due and I’m broke”)?

How much of our grief is from current events not reflecting a mental picture we’ve created to describe who we are (e.g., traits such kind, conscientious, hard working; and roles like engineer, husband, father)?

And how much of the grief is from worrying about the effect on meticulous PR job we’ve done our whole life, creating mental pictures in other people’s minds (“what will so-and-so think of me when they hear about this?”).

Once we can tease apart these factors, the magnitude of the grief we experience is often reduced significantly, and it becomes even easier to recover rather than stew in worry, anger, shame, or other negative emotions.

Why embrace failure?

Backing up a moment — isn’t it good that failure feels terrible? Isn’t that what helps drives us to succeed, and navigate away from mistakes?

I’m in no way suggesting a masochistic love of failure.

I love how we talk about self-management in the Search Inside Yourself class as

a shift from compulsion to choice

“Unpleasantness” is an amazing set of data points that we are getting about a situation. Normally we are reacting to the unpleasantness by keeping it at arm’s length, we are in effect compelled, trapped or victimized into a course of action by our desire to get rid of that unpleasantness.

I’m advocating learning to integrate these data points into a broader understanding of a situation and then proactively choosing the most skillful course of action.

But like any skill, this too is a skill that needs to be practiced.

Back to the cushion

So as we practice being with the pleasant and unpleasant on the cushion, we get better at recovering from life’s setbacks.
As we get better at recovering from life’s setbacks, we stop over-indexing on safety and are more open to taking risks and exploring opportunities.
When those pan out, great!
In case they don’t, we get more practice at failing (and recovering), and feel even more liberated from the fear of the unknown.

So while you may think of meditators as sedentary and stationary; I believe there’s a way in which sustained practice can support a life of great adventure and exploration!

Footnote

In a way I feel vulnerable writing this. You may have read memoirs where the authors celebrate and glorify their failures, while writing from a vantage point of success and subsequent accolades. Part of me is thinking: “What if that high point never comes for me? What if this is as good as it gets?”

However, among the things I’m grateful to have experienced and observed first-hand these past few years is that nobody is spared from the pains of being human. Not the the super-wealthy, not the successful entrepreneurs and executives, not movie stars, not the suits, the hardhats, and no — not even the monks.

Which is why I’m pretty sure that you too have felt this uncertainty at some point in your life.

And so I wanted to share this post from “the trenches.” From a place of peacefully walking through a plateau of not knowing what comes next.

Integrative Scientist Pizzorno: “Toxicity is the Primary Driver of Disease”

Regular medicine is awakening to the dumbfounding reality that clinical care accounts for just 10%-20% of the factors contributing to health. But if research recently presented by a leader in the revitalization of the naturopathic medical profession – and of the movements for functional and integrative medicine – is correct, even the most aggressive adopters of the new thinking are still missing the boat.

The new thinking argues that if we want to create health, we need to address things like poverty, education, genetics and healthy behaviors. The figure describes these.

2016-08-05-1470421229-8733640-socialdeterminants_health250.PNG

Yet according to best-selling author and researcher Joseph Pizzorno, ND, even these new adopters are grossly understating the most significant factor. In a recent presentation at Snowbird, Utah at the annual conference of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, Pizzorno presented compelling evidence that – if his calculations hold up – “toxicity is the primary driver of disease.”

Pizzorno, the co-author of the Textbook of Natural Medicine – the first major textbook detailing the evidence behind natural therapeutics – is the leading figure in the re-emergence of the naturopathic medical profession over the past 40 years. The founding president of what is now Bastyr University is presently the editor of the peer-reviewed and PubMed-indexed scientific publication, Integrative Medicine: A Clinician’s Journal.

Since leaving the Bastyr presidency, Pizzorno led a multi-year employee health project with a significant Canadian employer. Through it, he opened his eyes further to what he now believes is the most important yet grossly under-respected target for remedial action if health is our goal.

Pizzorno and colleagues first shared well-known data showing that our present chronic disease epidemics – including obesity, diabetes, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and kidney disease – are temporally associated with a parallel rise in environmental pollutants. The worst are what are called POPS – “persistent organic pollutants.” These are chemical compounds that are defined as “resistant to environmental degradation through chemical, biological, and photolytic processes.” They have long half-lives and hang around in our soils and tissues.

2016-08-05-1470422146-8430136-Pizzorno_photo2016.jpg

The parallel arcs of increase – see the graph below — in each from 1960s to the present are startling. In his presentation, Pizzorno showed that, in contradistinction, the sugar-and-diabetes relationship is not nearly as compelling.

In his presentation, Pizzorno then described a mathematical model he and his team built for predicting the “attributable fraction” of a disease that can be linked to specific chemical exposures. The team worked out data for high profile POPS: DDT, glyphosates, arsenic, lead, vinyl chloride and a dozen more.

The conclusions are ugly. Reported Pizzorno: “Greater than 50% of ADHD is due to just 3 toxins. Over 50% of diabetes is due to phthalates, arsenic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.” His team found direct correlations between specific POPs and IQ decreases in children. Individual toxins were found to have profound impacts on numerous serious diseases. “Nearly 45% of Alzheimer’s,” reported Pizzorno, “is linked to DDT alone.” The calculations put the attributable fraction of arsenic to prostate cancer at 31.5%. Over 40% of gout in women is arsenic related. PCBs had a high association with heart attacks. And on and on.

The POPS are everywhere. Pizzorno presented a slide that denoted the following proportional sources: food (70%), water (10%), house and yard chemicals (10%), air (5%) and health and beauty aids (5%).

I asked Pizzorno after the talk if the formula has been vetted. He responded that he’d had it reviewed by multiple scientists and the method is under discussion. He added that “the results are so surprising that all possible critiques need to be thoroughly considered.” That process continues.

The week after the presentation, I opened my email to a document from the Health and Medicine Division of the National Academies of Sciences entitled “The Interplay Between Environmental Chemical Exposures and Obesity: Proceedings of a Workshop.” The workshop was a world removed from the gathering of naturopathic physicians to whom Pizzorno presented his findings. Yet they had similar conclusions.

2016-08-05-1470422462-3433366-Toxinschronicchartto2000.gif

Instead of naturopathic doctors whose whole system world views dispose them toward anticipating health problems from toxins, the report sponsors included Exxon, Royal Dutch Shell and Colgate Palmolive. Yet here, too, according to the introduction to the report, “the speakers at the workshop discussed evidence from both studies with animal models and human epidemiological studies that exposure to environmental chemicals is linked both to weight gain and to glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity, inflammation, and other aspects of the metabolic syndrome.”

Their content was neither as wide-ranging or causality-specific as that presented by Pizzorno. Yet the agreement that addressing diet and lifestyle alone are not going to get to the bottom of the huge and costly obesity epidemic is strong. And it should not surprise that the naturopathic and integrative medicine communities remain a few steps ahead of regular medicine in respecting the damage of these agents in human health.

The implications of Pizzorno’s research and analysis are profound. The piece of the pie chart above on determinants of health would need to vastly expand from the 10% share attributed to the “physical environment” to reflect the corrosive, disruptive forces of toxins on our tissues and life processes.

Presidential candidates vie over whether we need $ 1-trillion or $ 500-billion or $ 250-billion to begin to get our nation’s infrastructure in order. But what is the budget needed for economic conversion from POPS-riddled industry, agriculture, energy production, food processing, housing and consumer goods to methods in each of these arenas that co-habit with human health? Isn’t this an infrastructure we need to address?

Pizzorno’s data suggest that unless we wake to more sustainable living, we should prepare ourselves for a paradoxical future. Our highways and bridges and schools and water systems seem to have bipartisan support for renovation. Yet these fresh environs will be inhabited by human beings crippled by diseases of toxicity.

The 4 Differences Between Introversion and Social Anxiety

This article first appeared on QuietRev.com

Two introverts walk into a bar.

No, really.

Liam and Alex are at the local wood-paneled pub having lunch—an incongruous combination of veggie burgers with bacon. “They cancel each other out,” says Liam. They are both handsome, soft-spoken 22-year-old college seniors, graduating this spring with honors.  They are housemates who have been known to finish each other’s sentences. Most importantly, they are self-proclaimed introverts.

Ask Liam about this coming Saturday night, and he says, “Well, I’ll probably chill with my roommates. We jam—I’m on the keyboards. I’ll probably have dinner with some friends. We’ll end up eating out though we’re trying to cook more. I’m still lousy, but I’m learning—I make a mean pad thai. I’ve never been a raging party guy—it’s not my scene.”

Ask Alex the same question, and you’ll get pretty much the same answer, except for “guitar” and “pulled pork sliders” replacing their counterparts. But there’s one other tweak: “I’ve never been a raging party guy—I always think I’m going to say something stupid.”

It’s subtle, but it’s there: social anxiety, defined as the fear of being judged. It’s self-consciousness on steroids.

Now, you may be a non-anxious introvert like Liam. You may love solitude and intimate gatherings but remain comfortable being seen by others. Not loving huge parties or group work is preference, not fear.

But you can also be a socially anxious introvert, like Alex. Lately, as introversion is validated and empowered, I hear folks like Liam and Alex proudly describing themselves as introverts, which is liberating and game-changing. But those similar to Alex still feel that something’s off.

To be sure, with Alex’s social anxiety comes other, valuable, stuff. The socially anxious among us often have deep emotional empathy. We are finely attuned to the feelings of others. We are the diplomats, the ambassadors. We navigate a multicultural, twenty-first century world with sensitivity and care.

But sometimes our social antennae are too sensitive—the social smoke alarm goes off too readily. Social anxiety is the third most common psychological disorder, right after the big boys of depression and alcoholism. Up to 13% of American adults will have social anxiety that reaches clinical proportions in their lifetime. A whopping 90% of people will describe themselves as “shy” at some point during their lives. And, of course, who doesn’t have socially awkward moments? (Answer: no one. Well, okay, maybe psychopaths, but who wants to be one of them?)

Although introversion and social anxiety may look like a psychological potato-potahto, they’re really more like apples and oranges. How can you tell the difference between social anxiety and introversion? What’s the bright line between an introverted temperament to be honored and social fear to be challenged? Let’s check out four of the biggest differences:

1: Introversion is born. Social anxiety is made.

Introversion is a part of your inherent personality—a from-the-womb, dyed-in-the-wool trait. And while those who are socially anxious also carry a genetic predisposition toward it, there’s more than just temperament at play. In an indelicate analogy, genetics loads the gun, but experience pulls the trigger.

Two things happen to make us socially anxious: the first is learning. One way or another, we learn—mistakenly!—that we don’t measure up to scrutiny. We might absorb the worries of a parent who frets about what the neighbors think, internalize the social pressure to be “outgoing” when we’re anything but, or be seared by a social trauma like bullying. However social anxiety works its way into our brain, we somehow grow to believe at a young age that people will judge us and find us lacking.

The second ingredient for social anxiety is avoidance. We bolt at the end of the meeting so we miss the ensuing small talk, feign illness so we don’t have to go to the holiday party, or stare at our phones whenever we feel nervous, all of which keeps us mired. And, of course, we hide in the bathroom. We don’t get the chance to discover this social stuff isn’t as bad as we think and maybe, just maybe, we got this.

2: In social anxiety, there’s a fear of being revealed.

In social anxiety, we think there’s something wrong with us. (Imagine “think” with a big asterisk because even though we don’t believe it, our perceived flaws are either not true or only true to a degree no one cares about.)

That perceived flaw could be physical: maybe you think you turn lobster-red when you talk or that your hands shake like James Bond’s martini. Or it could be a character flaw: you think if you speak up in class, everyone will decide you’re stupid or a loser. You might fear a poor social performance: you picture yourself frozen and silent, blinking in mute horror or babbling like a pageant contestant failing the on-stage question. No matter the perceived flaw, you fear the reveal.

By contrast, the non-socially anxious introvert thinks what you see is what you get. There’s nothing to be revealed because there’s nothing to hide.

3: Perfectionism lays fertile ground for social anxiety.

Far from fifty shades of grey, in social anxiety, your social acumen is black or white. You think you’ll either achieve a flawless social performance or are destined to end up on a YouTube reel entitled “Epic Social Fails.” This all-or-nothing approach (no pressure or anything!) makes us think that the only way to stave off inevitable harsh criticism is to be effortlessly witty and charming. And that, in turn, makes us feel paralyzed. There’s an old quote from French writer Francois de la Rouchfoucauld:

“Nothing so much prevents our being natural as the desire to seem so.”

Hear, hear.

For non-anxious introverts, by contrast, being seen by others isn’t a performance. There’s no anticipated judgment. You can pepper your presentation with “ums” and have awkward silence in conversation, and it doesn’t necessarily mean anything bad about you, nor is there anything at stake. In other words, some conversations are absorbing and flow easily. Others may be graceless or banal, but you know that doesn’t mean you are too.

4: Introversion is your way. Social anxiety gets in your way.

Social anxiety is driven by fear. It makes you slip out of the birthday party early because you’re convinced you’re boring or don’t fit in or that you’re breaking out in hives and everyone will see. But then you miss the cake and the singing, and despite what you think, you will be missed by others. Social anxiety gets in the way of living life. You miss out on what people have to offer because you’re either physically absent or stuck in self-monitoring mode—worrying, like Alex, that you’ll say something stupid—when you are with them.

Now, Liam may leave the party early too, but there’s none of the self-criticism and self-consciousness involved. Many of us, like Liam, would really, honestly, like to go home, eat a bowl of cereal, and watch the game with our housemates. No judgment, no self-flagellation, no convincing ourselves we don’t care. We choose to walk out the door; fear doesn’t choose for us.

So, while at first blush, social anxiety may seem like a souped-up version of introversion, they’re as different as pad thai and pulled pork sliders. The good news? For Alex, practice, perspective, and facing his fears can make all the difference. Social anxiety issolvable. And working on it won’t change his introverted personality; indeed, it doesn’t need to. But it can dial down the fear and recalibrate that social smoke detector.

And that’s never stupid, no matter how you say it.

Here’s How It Physically Feels To Have A Panic Attack

It can be difficult to put into words just how debilitating mental illness can be for someone. Enter this visual demonstration.

The SoulPancake video above takes viewers through the anatomy of a panic attack, a common symptom of mental health disorders. The descriptions are spot-on, from feeling nauseous to experiencing shortness of breath.

“Most times there’s no cause at all,” the narrator explains. “I did nothing wrong and everything right. I followed protocol. I could have been happy. Anxiety just doesn’t follow the rules.”

Nearly one in five American adults deals with a mental health condition in a given year. And as apparent by the depiction above, they’re not something a person can just “brush off” ― they cause real physical and emotional reactions. That means they demand the same sensitivity and understanding as any other health issue.

Take a look at the video above to learn more about the reality of panic attacks and mental illness.

Certainly makes you think, right?

Things to Consider When Hiring Friends

“Hi, my sister told me you worked at this company and I would love to take you to lunch and discuss the administrative assistant role that is currently available.”

“Hey, I saw there is a job I think I’m really qualified for at your company, can you pass my resume along?”

“Hi. I know we haven’t talked in years but I am very interested in the account manager role at your company. I applied for it but I’m not sure if I’m qualified. Are you able to put in a good word for me?”

These were the types of emails, Facebook and LinkedIn messages I would receive on a weekly basis.

I was never in the recruiting or human resources departments. I was an employee at companies that were very reputable. Companies that were extremely sought-after. Companies that were on lists of “Best Places to Work” and “Most Fun Work Environment.”

When “friends” saw that I worked for these companies – they immediately came looking for me to help them get a job.

The cliché phrase, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know” certainly rings true. It’s hard to acquire jobs by blindly applying on job sites but how does an employee at an existing company handle responding to friends or friends of friends who are interested in working there? What’s an appropriate response?

“I found it helpful to ask the candidate to be specific about why they were interested in working at the company, and their main differentiators as a job seeker. I generally ask what is one facet in their competency area they’d suggest changing, or what’s something they’ve noticed that we as a company could improve upon.” says Brooke German, founder of AREA GREY.

Having the candidate explain why they want to join the company and showcase what makes them different from all other candidates, really puts them on the spot to show their true interest, admiration and connection to the company.

“This tactic of gleaning additional information and requiring a bit more thought from the candidate enables me to separate serious candidates from those less eager and allows me to feel comfortable recommending them to hiring managers if their skill sets are appropriate.” says German.

There are plenty of people who are applying to 25 jobs a week without really paying attention to what the qualifications and requirements are. They see a cool company and want to be in on it.

“I’ve always been very weary of making introductions or recommendations for friends on the job front, because being someone’s good friend does not necessarily give you any indication of their work capabilities, business acumen, etc.” says marketing and communications consultant, Brona Cosgrave. “I always proceed with caution when making an intro to HR, clearly stating the level of my relationship and interaction. I never presume too much, as a bad recommendation can reflect negatively on you too.”

Sam Zises, Founder & CEO of [L]earned Media notes that many companies have referral programs setup, which incentivizes employees to recommend their friends resumes. This often seems worthwhile to employees even if they don’t really know how qualified the candidate is. “If you work at a smaller firm, you may be a bit more hesitant to forward your awkward cousin or younger brother’s resume with the risk that it will reflect poorly on you.” says Sam. “To avoid these circumstances, I often find it best to simply supply that individual with the contact information or job website, and tell them that you’re ‘just not in a position to make a referral’.

When you’re considering submitting a ‘friends’ resume to the hiring manager – consider your relationship to the candidate, how this can reflect on you and if you think it’s really worth the risk.

5 Inspiring Older Athletes That Could Totally Kick Your Ass

Younger athletes at this year’s Olympics like Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt might be household names, but here at Huff/Post 50 we think the older athletes are even more inspiring. They, too, hit the pavement, push themselves to the limit and are in the best shape of their lives.

Here are some older athletes who prove age can’t keep us from accomplishing some pretty incredible things:

1. Hidekichi Miyazaki

If you thought breaking a Guinness World Record was cool, imagine doing it at 105. Last September, Japanese centenarian Hidekichi Miyazaki ran a 100-meter dash in a cool 42.2 seconds, making him the oldest competitive sprinter in the world.

But what’s most inspiring about Miyazaki is that he didn’t even start running competitively until his 90s! With ever the competitive spirit, he says he wished he’d been able to run the dash faster, but not to worry ― he still plans to keep at it for another couple of years.

2. Charles Eugster

At 97, Charles Eugster has the enviable physique you might expect to see on someone decades younger. But if you ask him, there’s no reason you shouldn’t have a “beach body” at any age. Eugster has said he wants to be turning heads no matter how old he is, but jokes aside, he takes his fitness seriously.

And his story is truly inspiring. Eugster is the world’s fastest sprinter in the 95-plus category, though he only started running in his 90s. At age 95, he smashed the world record for the 200-meter dash in his age category. His motivation? “Our perception of age is completely faulty … you can start something new at any age.”

3. Johanna Quaas

Just watching Johanna Quaas on the bars will make your core hurt. The 90-year-old is the world’s oldest gymnast and still looks better in a leotard than most people could ever hope to. The retired gym teacher says there’s no reason you shouldn’t be able to tumble, balance and tuck at every age as long as you keep up with your fitness regimen.

For her, that means practicing gymnastics twice a week and walking or swimming for an hour every day otherwise.

4. Fred Winter

Struggling to do a single push-up? There’s a centenarian that can do more than you. That’s at least 100 to be exact. WWII veteran Fred Winter is in the best shape of his life at 101 years young. After deciding to get in shape after turning 70, Winter has been crushing it, competing at various senior fitness competitions and the National Senior Games. Last year he became the oldest person to run the 100-meter dash at the games and took home a few gold medals.

So how does he do it? Winter is a self-described “health nut” and reportedly still does 100 pushups every day, watches his diet and makes sure to get plenty of exercise.

5. Lew Hollander

This 86-year-old man of steel, er, iron has completed the ultimate test of endurance and fitness. Hollander holds the record for being the oldest person to complete the famed Ironman competition at 82. He’s kept biking, swimming and running ever since, even competing last year.

“Move it or lose it,” is his mantra, and he doesn’t take it lightly. Hollander’s fitness routine includes strength training for his body, but he also keeps his mind sharp by playing ping-pong.

When Work Is Not Enough

When Work Is Not Enough

Rich in analysis, Wh en Work Is Not Enough w ill be essential reading for anyone interested in the impact and future of welfare reform.

Your Body, Your Diet: A Complete Program for Losing Weight, Boosting Energy, and Being Your Best Self

Your Body, Your Diet: A Complete Program for Losing Weight, Boosting Energy, and Being Your Best Self

Elizabeth Dane has helped hundreds of people control their weight and lead healthier, calmer, more rewarding lives. Now it’s your turn. With Dr. Dane’s breakthrough new book, you can finally look–and feel–exactly the way you want . . . and restore and rejuvenate your body and spirit at the same time! Why does the diet that works wonders for your best friend fail miserably when you try it? The answer, says Dr. Dane, is metabolic type. Our metabolic types determine not only the rate at which we burn calories but also our cravings for particular foods, our changing energy levels throughout the day, the amount of rest and exercise we need, even our personalities. It stands to reason that if you follow a diet that is not tailored to your own meta type, it simply won’t work–no matter how conscientiously you follow the routine. In a program that is anything but routine, Dr. Dane combines the wisdom of ancient Eastern medicine with the latest findings of Western medical science to create a weight loss and lifestyle strategy exclusively for you. This remarkable book includes a detailed, step-by-step, 28-day guide to your personal renewal, including:• How to determine your meta type and start on your new life today• Why you crave the foods that are most damaging to your body–and how to wean yourself off them• Weekly shopping lists and menu plans that make your diet regimen a breeze • Why the combination of foods is as essential as the amount of food you eat• How to maximize your nutrients and burn off fat through correct food preparation techniques (for example, never fry foods containing protein)• How to use vitamins, supplements, and elixirs to boost your body’s cell-renewing potential• How natural stress busters like essential oils can ease and hasten weight loss• An exercise program for your meta type that will condition, strengthen, and sculpt your bodyGive yourself the body–and the life–you have always wanted. Far more than just a weight-loss program, Your Body, Your Diet is a detailed road map to a healthier, more vibrant, more energetic you! From the Hardcover edition.

If Anyone Is Unifying The GOP, It’s Clinton, Not Trump

So, that happened. At the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, expressions of party unity toward the nominee, Donald Trump, have failed to fully flower. The beginning of the convention was marred by two consecutive days in which the restless “Stop Trump” faction of delegates attempted to have their voices heard against the superior parliamentary maneuverings of the presiding party officials. Then, on Wednesday night, it was time for Trump supporters to let their feelings be known. They greeted Texas Sen. Ted Cruz ― who had pointedly referenced the anti-Trump faction’s demand for the right to “vote their conscience” as he declined to offer Trump his endorsement ― with a fusillade of boos and angry chants, drowning out the tail end of Cruz’s speech.

This is probably not the way Trump wanted his coronation to go. Despite the evident fractures within the party, however, there is one thing that does seem to unite everyone in Cleveland ― a keenly honed animus for Hillary Clinton. And this party conclave has taken that hostility to new, feverish heights with the constant chant of “Lock her up,” a slogan imported into the convention from the Alex Jones-led Infowars set that have been a constant presence on the streets outside the Quicken Loans Arena.

On this week’s edition of “So That Happened,” we hit the ground in Cleveland to talk to delegates on the inside about Cruz’s speech, as well as agitators on the outside who have deftly imprinted their own wild-eyed rhetoric on the proceedings.

Also on this week’s “So That Happened,” Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.) talks to us about the Republican convention, we discuss the high stakes of Clinton’s search for a running mate and we run down the troubling implications of a failed coup d’etat in Turkey.

“So, That Happened” is hosted by Jason Linkins, Zach Carter and Arthur Delaney. Joining them this week: California Representative Xavier Becerra as well as Huffington Post reporters Akbar Ahmed, Laura Barron-Lopez and Mike McAuliff.

This podcast was produced, edited and engineered by Christine Conetta, with assistance from Zach Young.

American Consultants Rx states that it will continue to strive to assist those in need.

The American Consultants Rx discount prescription cards are to be given free to anyone in need of help curbing the high cost of prescription drugs.

Due to the rising costs, unstable economics, and the mounting cost of prescriptions, American Consultants Rx Inc. (ACRX) a.k.a (ACIRX) an Atlanta based company was born in 2004. The ACRX discount prescription card program was created and over 25 million discount prescription cards were donated to over 18k organizations across the country to be distributed to those in need of prescription assistance free of charge since 2004.

The ACRX cards will offer discounts of name brand drugs of up to 40% off and up to 60% off of generic drugs. They also possess no eligibility requirements, no forms to fill out, or expiration date as well .One card will take care of a whole family. Also note that the ACRX cards will come to your organization already pre-activated .The cards are good at over 50k stores from Walgreen, Wal mart, Eckerd”s, Kmart, Kroger, Publix, and many more. Any one can use these cards but ACRX is focusing on those who are uninsured, underinsured, or on Medicare. The ACRX cards are now in Spanish as well.

American Consultants Rx made arrangements online for the ACRX card to be available at http://www.acrxcards.com where it can also be downloaded. This arrangement has been made to allow organizations an avenue to continue assisting their clients in the community until they receive their orders of the ACRX cards. ACRX made it possible for cards to be requested from online for individuals and organizations free of charge. Request for the ACRX cards can also be made by mailing a request to : ACRX, P.O.Box 161336,Atlanta,GA 30321, faxing a written request to 404-305-9539,or calling the office at 404-767-1072. American Consultants Rx is working diligently to assist as many people and organizations as possible. It should be noted that while many other organizations and companies place a cost on their money saving cards, American Consultants Rx does not believe a cost should be applied, just to assist our fellow Americans. American Consultants Rx states that it will continue to strive to assist those in need.

My Love Letter To You

2016-07-15-1468620026-5807673-1400415_10154064214148711_917411793151883215_o.jpg

Thank you for the love letter. Thank you for the lengthy text message you wrote me from a space of total vulnerability. You hit send hoping for the best as your heart rested anxiously on your sleeve awaiting my text back. Thank you for the crumpled up piece of paper that you ran to give me on the beach, leaving your lifeguard tower abandoned for a split second so as to not miss the chance to ask me out. Thank you for the ride home from yoga. I know it took a lot of guts to ask me on a date just a breath before I closed the car door shut. Your cheeks were bright red as you grasped the steering wheel. But you did it, you faced your fear and made the ask.

I may have turned you down but I didn’t ignore you and I was polite, gracious, and compassionate in my response. I realize that it’s not what you were hoping to hear but I thanked you. I thanked for your sincerity and I meant it when I said that I was humbled by the effort. I see how you show up for love and it’s the same I see in me. Believe me when I say that I know how you feel.

There was the time that I went to the other side of the country to surprise you at your concert, palms sweaty in the back of the venue as I awaited the imminent moment that I’d say, “Hi! I came to see you because I care, I’ve missed you and I really like you.” Remember when I sent you that tiny box with a gemstone in it to protect you on your travels? Or what about when I left you a flower under your windshield wiper?

I’m the not-so-secret admirer just like you.

Whenever my romantic actions result in a “turn down” I don’t let it get me down. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be bold and tear down any walls of fear that existed around being rejected. I know I did the right thing by stepping forward and diving into it.
Disappointment can last a minute but regret can last a lifetime.

When I receive your old-school love letter, your authentic compliment in line at Whole Foods, your poem and your nervous ask, know that I see and understand you. I may not say “yes” but I’ll tell you thank you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. It’s easy to hide behind technology as we explore our hearts that are seeking to connect but It’s not easy to show up in person. If we desire something or someone, it’s our actions that will propel us to a result. Some of the most treasured words to me are those spoken by Mahatma Gandhi,

“Your beliefs become your thoughts,
Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions,
Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values,
Your values become your destiny.”

Thank you for the love letter, the art you made me, the authentic compliment, and for asking a stranger to dinner. I hope that you’ll receive this love letter back to you:

Dear Fellow Romantic,

Please keep showing up for life like you’ve been. Don’t let a “no” or even silence jade you. It’s you who sees the rose and it’s you who gets to smell her enchanting aroma. With eyes wide open continue to see, feel and express your deep experience of the world because that will inspire others to dive into their fears instead of letting fear block destiny. The more you show up for life in full expression of your hopes and dreams, the more that life will become your dream come true. It’s the romantics that see the glass half full. So please, beautiful soul, never become jaded. Always write love letters and always be able to receive them with grace, compassion, and a warm thank you.

With Love,
Alicia

How To Thrive With Stress

“For fast-acting relief, try slowing down.” ~ Lily Tomlin

Significant events in our lives, even ones that we expect to be positive, such as falling in love, usually cause many changes in our daily existence, and affect our perception about our life or plans for the future. As creatures of habit, any deviation in our routine creates some level of stress, as do more difficult situations such as the loss of a job or a loved one.

Dr. Dave Richo pointed out in his book, The Five Things We Cannot Change…and the Happiness We Find by Embracing Them, that one of the five things that can’t be changed in life is that “everything changes and ends.” So considering that everything in life is in a constant state of change (in fact, the molecules of the chair you may be sitting on are actually changing at this very moment), stress is a necessary part of life.

If we were to have no stress at all, we would not experience new and exciting adventures. Good stresses consist of positive events, such as falling in love or starting along an exciting new path toward our dreams. These stresses are referred to as eustress, and while too much of a good thing can cause us to feel stressed out, in general, eustress is caused by stresses we can cope with and that motivate us, focus our energy, create excitement and a feeling of vitality and passion about life–even improve our performance. Distress, on the other hand, is caused by situations that we believe we cannot handle and result in us feeling stressed out.

Whether we believe that the changes caused by a life event are exciting and that we can handle them — or we believe that they are overwhelming and beyond our ability to cope — determines if we adapt smoothly and enjoy the excitement of a new experience or feel stressed out by it. Therefore, it’s our reaction to the changes we face, as well as our ability to adapt to them, which creates the impact on our lives

One of the greatest causes of stress is our lack of acceptance of our present circumstances. “What is” includes how things are right now, as well as the fact that everything changes and ends. Wrote Dr. Richo, “Every beginning leads to a finale. Built into all experiences, persons, places, and things is a life span.” When we cling to things or to situations, we feel stress because, no matter how hard we try, we can’t stop this reality of life.

The stress response is also often referred to as the fight-or-flight response. Our body prepares to fight or to run from any situation we perceive as threatening. At this time, both mind and body make adjustments in order to deal with what we believe to be a potential threat. These include increased blood pressure, rate of breathing, metabolism and muscle tension. Even brain waves rise in intensity and frequency. Blood flow to the muscles of our arms and legs actually elevates by 300 percent to 400 percent when we’re in this mode. And production of adrenaline, norepinephrine, and cortisol surges in order to increase our energy and alertness. All of these adjustments occur so that, in the case of a real danger, we’re prepared to fight it or to flee from it.

In reality, most of the stressors we face are false alarms. The threat is rarely one of life or death and there rarely is a reason to fight or run. Usually, there is no threat at all beyond what we create in our own minds. If we have a tendency to interpret events as dangerous, then we’ll frequently (perhaps daily, or even many times per day) experience this fight-or-flight response and will, most likely, experience it for extended lengths of time.

The research has demonstrated again and again that chronic stress can cause damage to every system of the human body, as well as depression and anxiety disorders, which consist of frequent or constant feelings of fear that interfere with enjoying life. According to cardiologist, stress researcher, and author of The Relaxation Response, Dr. Herbert Benson, because we don’t actually have to fight or flee in most situations in which we experience this fight-or-flight response, we don’t burn off the energy that we produced during this reaction. So, for example, the chronic increase of blood flow and the resulting chronic increase of blood pressure can then lead to cardiac problems, arthrosclerosis, strokes, and internal bleeding. In addition, the rise in production of adrenaline and norepinephrine, if it continues for an extended period of time, can cause irregular heart rhythm and increased sensitivity to physical pain, as well as emotional distress, such as anxiety, depression, lower frustration tolerance, irritability, and quickness to anger.

But, take heart — there’s good news. The very same mechanism that turned on the stress response can also turn it off. Dr. Benson, coined this the “relaxation response”. When our body is in a relaxed state, it’s impossible to experience the stress response because these are two totally opposite biological states. According to Benson, “The human body is geared to react by providing this calm state — the opposite of the fight-or-flight response — whenever the mind is focused for some time and disregards intrusive, everyday thoughts. In other words, when the mind quiets down, the body follows suit. So powerful, in fact, is this process that you need not believe.”

Even better news is that by inducing that relaxation response on a regular basis, we can heal health issues and psychological distress caused by stress. “Just as repeated activation of the fight-or-flight response can lead to sustained problems in the body and its mechanics, so too can repeated activation of the relaxation response reverse those trends and mend the internal wear and tear brought on by stress,” wrote Benson.

Said Steve Kane, yoga instructor, when he was on my radio program, “We can build our resilience to stress by shifting our awareness to our body and our breath. Just a few minutes per day of conscious breathing can help us to build this resilience.”

Here are 10 tips for manifesting the relaxation response and building our resilience to stress:

1. Breathe in slowly and gently through your nose to the count of 6. Breathe out slowly and gently through your mouth to the count of four. As you inhale, try to expand your belly. As you exhale, notice your belly sinking. With each inhalation and exhalation, think of this little meditation recitation from, Peace Is Every Step, by the Vietnamese Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh, “Breathing in, I calm my body. Breathing out, I smile. Dwelling in the present moment, I know this is a wonderful moment!”

2. Be like a child again and color. Adult coloring books are the new craze and for good reason. Coloring has been found to calm the mind, slow down thoughts, and ease anxiety and stress.

3. Terry Hershey, in his book, The Power of Pause, suggests looking at the moon, if you can. “Stare at it and breathe in, breathe out. Think of this moonlight bathing your whole life — even the parts that are disorganized and unfinished.”

4. Use relaxing imagery. For example, close your eyes and imagine that you are floating on a giant leaf and gently drifting along with the slow current of a lazy river.

5. Listen to relaxing music in combination with any of the above techniques.

6. Meditate.

7. Do yoga.

8. Take a 20-minute Epsom salt and lavender oil bath.

9. Get a massage.

10. Try on an attitude of curiosity and openness about changes in your life, even allowing yourself to feel excited, rather than fearing these new experiences.

Finally, here’s an extra tip for inducing the relaxation response: Cultivate an attitude of gratitude. Be grateful for everything that is, all of the changes of life, even those that we don’t particularly like. The painful experiences help us grow and they prove that we’re actually living life and taking risks, opening the doorway for new experiences and deeper love. As Leonard Cohen wrote in his song, Anthem, “There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.”
